India has always been known for its skilled craftsmanship that greatly varies from region to region—Handloom being one of them. It’s so sad when tradition diminishes throughout generations, so we’re stoked to take note of designers who are reviving this endangered skills. The best part of these local artistan’s designs is that they strike a great balance between contemporary and classic (so we’re not afraid to wear them).

Here, a few favourite designers whose creations will hold a special place in your wardrobe for eternity:

1.Raw Mango

The key aesthetic of this label is that they only use handloom fabric. Sanjay Garg was the first to revive the benarsi weave in such quirky motifs. His designs put a strong emphasis on the functionality and wearability of each garment.

2. Payal Khandwala

Khandwala’s designs draw inspiration from her past life as a painter. Notice the use of bold contrasting colour here? Edgy but still ladylike—love it.

3. Anavila Misra

Misra produces sustainable and luxurious textiles that retain their rustic aesthetic. We’re digging the “artsy” vibe her clothes are putting out there.

4. Gaurang Shah

We consider Shah the pioneer of high-end handcrafted sares and garments. From kanjeeverams to patolas—he has it all covered.

4. Rahul Mishra

Misha continuously works to empower and employ the Indian Craft Community through his sustainable design interventions. His brand’s philosophy revolves around integrating the rich heritage of Indian craft with the constantly growing influence of global fashion.

The best part of these timeless designs is that they can be passed down over generations (like investing in a classic Chanel suit…thanks Mom!) that we guarantee will always find a relevant moment in your life. Has your family passed down any handlooms?
