Hi everyone – I’m MissMalini’s friend Lavi Kilaru and am blogging from the LoveGold House in Los Angeles during this exciting pre-Oscar week! We kicked it off with a fabulous cocktail party held in honor of this year’s Oscar darling and it-girl Lupita Nyong’o. Ms. Nyong’o is nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her heartbreaking and raw performance as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.

And the most amazing part is – this is her first major feature film! So it’s no surprise that tonight’s event was an exciting and sparkly evening put together by LoveGold House at the legendary Chateau Marmont Hotel’s private event space.

The crowd was thrilled to be a part of celebrating this young woman whose meteoric rise has caught all of Hollywood’s attention. And it’s not just because of her powerful and challenging breakout performance. She is already being looked upon as a fashion icon for her impeccable and elegant fashion choices both on and off the red carpet. That night, she stunned in a chic purple Stella McCartney dress.

Ok, so what girl doesn’t love gold? Now picture a specially commissioned, super-trendy house in Los Angeles created by the World Gold Council which is FULL of GOLD jewellery! Yup, I spent all morning yesterday at the LoveGold house and (obviously) I loved it! I won’t lie, I was quite proud to see so many Indian brands on display at the Love Gold house and this little gold heart from the Azva collection totally stole mine. Isn’t it darling? I’m wearing it with my Nupur Kanoi jumpsuit to the Spirit Awards today along with two other Azva pieces I loved, yay!

This gorgeous bold neckpiece works brilliantly with a cocktail dress (and as you will soon see – even jumpsuits!) Rest assured you will always draw compliments for a piece like this, (my only word of caution would be to let the neckpiece be the star and keep the rest of the outfit colours earthy, subtle and complimentary.)

I had a chance to spend some time talking with Pamela Love about her jewellery and her inspiration. For the lines displayed at Chateau Marmont, Ms. Love said she was inspired by her recent travels to Morocco and travel in general, the moon and its phases and an overall profound sense of spirituality. Her creative process is experiential and she seeks out those experiences through travel whether it is across the United States or the world, using the visuals to sketch her next divine piece of jewellery.

After hearing her journey, I saw the jewellery in a whole new light and her inspirations really came to life in the pieces.

Of course, an important step to bringing such meaningful inspirations to life is choosing the right materials, and Ms. Love says that gold is absolutely her favourite material to use. She loves the way it feels on her skin because of its richness and loves that it has such history and story behind it. What makes it her favourite?

“I never wanted to take it off!” she said – a simple and genuine philosophy for deciding on how to add to your jewellery collection. It’s about connecting with a piece, and if it gives you the feeling that you just never want to take it off, then you know it’s for you!

After falling in love with her exquisite jewellery piece, I of course had to ask if she had ever visited India. She broke out in a huge smile and said she hasn’t but would LOVE to and that it is absolutely on her list of places to go in the near future. We chatted about Bombay and Jaipur and India’s deep relationship to gold and jewellery and she said she knew she would have to spend enough time there to explore all of these different aspects of the country.  I told her we would welcome her with open arms so let’s keep our fingers crossed that we get to see a Pamela Love jewellery line inspired by India soon!

A model at Lakmé Fashion Week

Last week we brought you ten collections that you should watch out for at the upcoming summer/resort season at Lakme Fashion Week.

Now, we bring you sneak peeks of eight more collections that we can’t wait to catch from the front row.

Nikhil Thampi

A design by Nikhil Thampi

Having wowed us in the past with his eclectic creations, Nikhil Thampi unleashes his Untamed collection this season. Zip detailing and rose-gold metallic flowers used as embellishments are the key elements that define this line.

Nikhil also explores a wide spectrum of colours, from white structured garments to shades of pink in rose and blush, and a fun, flirty mix of bold hues like red, mango, yellow and purple.

As for his silhouettes, look out for nifty tailored trousers, dress shirts, pencil skirts, structured blazers and well-fitted dresses.

A saree by Koecsh

The young and pretty Kresha Bajaj makes her big debut this season at Lakme Fashion Week with her high-end label, Koecsh. Known for her dark, edgy, punk rock yet extremely glamorous design sense, the line Kresha will display will see lots of black leather and sexy metal hardware in the form of chains, spikes and mesh.

Definitely not for the faint-hearted, the Koecsh silhouettes include lehengas, gowns, saris, pants, beaded capes and embellished collars – all with a definitive edgy twist.

Dragonflies on a saree blouse and bugs on your saree! This and more is what Anavila Misra will have you wear for the summer/resort 2014 season.

Anavila’s hand-woven linen saris are inspired by The Secret Life Of The Forest and have been woven by the tribal women of Jharkhand.

According to the designer, each saree takes close to two months to be completed and are in interesting hues of ecru, burnt rose, black, indigo, white, sap green and ochre.

Gaurang is known to revive and reinvent classic Indian fabrics and this year, he experiments with traditional Banarasi Weaves. His collection, called Chandbali, is a revival of antique odhnas with the khadi fabric.

Says Gaurang, “The collection is an ode to the imperial wardrobe from the time of the reign of Emperor Akbar. The collection incorporates auspicious motifs like gow mata, chand suraj and Buddhapada with chaand-bali inspired emboirdery.”

The traditional silhouettes include the jamas, achkans, angarkhas, sadris, shalukas and kalidaar lehengas.

Designs by Neeta Lulla

Known for the elaborate bridal wear, Neeta Lulla skips the bling this time around and will instead show off a line of indo-western silhouettes. The collection will be defined by simple and uncomplicated cuts to create easy styles which can also be worn as separates.

Neeta employs a tropical colour palette and has embellished it with muted Mokaish embellishments. The occasional Aztec accents are also dimensions one can look forward to.

Surya Sarkar is a young designer from Kolkata and his collection is very poetically called Song Of The Little Road.

The designer will show off a range of gowns, dresses, saris, jackets and drapes in a varied colour palette of grey, blue, gold, skin, cranberry, brown, pale yellow, dull orange and white.

A Swapnil Shinde fashion show is like an acid trip into the future but this time around, he takes you back in time as he presents An Affair To Remember.

Inspired by the glamour, elegance and beauty of 1950′s Hollywood, Swapnil’s immaculately crafted and voluminous structured silhouettes have merged traditional Paithani Maharashtrian saree weaves (in antique gold and orange borders) with geometrical peacock prints.

Ritika Mirchandani celebrates her second season at Lakme Fashion Week with a collection inspired by the 19th century Art Nouveau style which was in turn, inspired by natural forms and structures. Hence, Ritika’s garments take on natural and fluid forms in a direct tribute to this era. The colour palette is evocative of the natural colours of the sky, ranging from off-whites, lemons, and oranges, to navy and ink blues.

Veteran costume designer, Neeta Lulla, celebrated her 50th birthday in a grand way in Mumbai last night with her family and close friends in attendance.

The party was held at Arola at the JW Marriott Hotel and we’ve been told that Neeta hand-picked the cocktail and food menu to make for an incredible gastronomic experience.

Of course many of her Bollywood friends were there to celebrate this milestone with Neeta and among them were Hema Malini, Kalki Koechlin, Sameera Reddy, Sushma Reddy, Sonal Chauhan and Subhash Ghai.

The March edition of a glossy magazine sees the stunningly gorgeous Sridevi on the cover with an extensive fashion spread on the pages, inside.

One of the looks we liked most was of the glamorous star in a midnight blue velvet gown with a trail behind. Designed by Mayyur R Girotra, the gown is detailed with fabulous zardosi embroidery that has been inspired by Mughal architecture.

White Knights: Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto

With eyes glued to our screens and fingers crossed for our favourites, we dedicate that one night every year to the films and their stars that left us in awe. While fans wait for the end of the show for the winners, the fashionistas follow the Oscar arrivals – looking for that glorious dress that will go down in red carpet history. Over time, actresses have held the pedestal in their custom couture. However, this year, the men outshone the starlets with their sartorial choices. We pick the best-dressed boys at the Academy Awards 2014.

Rocker by day, actor by night – the beautiful Jared Leto, with Ryan Seacrest and Matthew McConaughey en suite, chose not to conform to the black tux uniform followed by their peers. Winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Leto was dressed in Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. Like a true rockstar, he effortlessly paired an ivory shawl collar jacket and tuxedo trousers with burgundy accents of a silk bow tie and pocket square. He tied up the look with Neil Lane platinum and diamond shirt studs and cufflinks.

My love for Riccardo Tisci, scores Michael B. Jordan a spot on this list. He wore Givenchy head to toe – dressed in a custom wool tuxedo with satin details, white poplin shirt and a black tie. What caught my fancy were the chrome highlights in the star collar clips and black nappa shoes. I give him 4 stars for sharp twist on the traditional tuxedo (he loses one for buttoning all the way down!)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cute smirk makes it difficult for me to complain. I covered up that face and seriously scrutinised his outfit choice for the evening. A notch up from black – the clean-cut, flecked Calvin Klein dinner suit is a piece I think every man should add to his wardrobe. Levitt sported an interesting bow-tie with the red pin button that’s been a staple in all his red carpet appearances. (To represent the ‘record’ button as his company is called Hit Record.) The dapper actor added a dash of fun with blue banana patterned socks that sat cheekily below his Johnston & Murphy shoes.

This year, Kevin Spacey and Chris Hemsworth widened the palette at the Oscar arrivals with their suave suits. The House of Cards star, wore a sharply tailored navy tuxedo with contrasting peak lapels by Burberry Prosum. Spacey added height to his look by dressing in a single deep shade. Ozzie hunk, Chris Hemsworth wore a David August tux in a rich burgundy. The look had an old world charm that was offset with a MontBlanc watch and Fred Leighton cuff links. I have to admit, I love a man who isn’t afraid of little colour!

Hate it or love it, Pharrell’s barely there trousers were the talk of cyber space the night of the Oscars. The ‘Happy’ singer wore a custom Lanvin ‘shux’ (short tux), with a black bow tie and grey calfskin lace ups. He donned signature bling with yellow diamond studs and Ofira Jewels bracelets with multi-colored diamonds. He ended the night performing “Happy,” on the Oscars stage in a leather Adidas jacket, red glitter sneakers and a Vivienne Westwood Ranger Hat.

I’d give Pharrell Willams the golden statue for dressing out of norm – he definitely threw me off my seat!

The reason? Because the Government of India has honoured him this year with the prestigious Padmashree Award.

Wendell told us, “It’s a win for the entire industry and I’m happy that the Indian fashion industry is finally being recognized.”

The event, that was hosted by director Sanjay Gupta, saw art works curated by Reshma Jani and Shwetambari Soni of Gallerie Angel Arts.

Among the art works on display were pieces by Anjilie Vellody, Arananashu Chowdhury, Bijita Sharma and Brinda Miller.

Kunal Kapoor was easily the best dressed man of the evening. He wore a checked sports jacket over a white shirt and white jeans. His cream-coloured shoes were quite chic as well.

I’m not very clear about why Tusshar Kapoor took the trouble to wear that jacket. If he had kept his look restricted to his red tee, black jeans and grey lace-up shoes, it would have suited him much better. The jacket is an overkill. Agree?

Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit

The premiere of Gulaab Gang was held at a cinema multiplex in Mumbai last night and apart from the lead stars – Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit – in attendance, we also spotted Jacqueline Fernandez, Mini Mathur and Kabir Khan.

Love! Love! Love! We love the baby pink shirt on Kabir and that rani pink kurta teamed with Aladin pants on his wife, Mini. This couple was clearly having fun with their wardrobe and we salute their spirit of style.

We weren’t very fussed with this ensemble by Arpita Mehta that Madhuri Dixit is wearing. It doesn’t portray any sense of style and the embroidery isn’t very unique either. Also, why is she wearing silver footwear when the embroidery is gold? A bit of a mismatch, no?

The other lead star of the film, Juhi Chawla (who incidentally plays a negative role for the first time in her career), wore a floral embroidered creme and pink Surily Goel kurta, churidar and waist-coat. She teamed the ensemble with beautiful gold earrings and bangles which added the perfect Indian touch. And don’t you just love those silver Kolhapuri wedges?

And finally, the perky and pretty Jacqueline Fernandez kicked up her heels in a sexy pair of orange shorts teamed with a peachy blouse. By far, this is our favourite look of the night even though it’s not pink.
