Kendall Jenner On The Cover Of Vogue India

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Vogue India featured none other than Hollywood’s hottest supermodel, Kendall Jenner on their May issue. This cover was shot by the iconic Mario Testino (Peruvian fashion photographer known for his work featured in international magazines like; Vogue, V Magazine, Vanity Fair and GQ), making the issue even more special and glamours. We don’t know when or how Kenny sneaked into our desi land, but she did so and landed in Jaipur for this cover shoot.

From their sneak preview, Vogue highlights their May cover girl Kendall who’s photographed in the stunning historic buildings and hallways of the Samode Palace in Jaipur.

The issue also features other Indian actors; Katrina Kaif and Sushant Singh Rajput.

Keeping in tone with the “chic” that is, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld decided to go for a Grecian theme this year for the Chanel Cruise fashion show. After the Cuban themed show that everyone from the fashion industry was talking about, there’s now this!

Although, the venue was at the Grand Palais in Paris, the fashion show seemed to be straight out of ancient Greece. Marble-like structures and stone was the backdrop for the runway. Soft, breezy dresses, gladiator heels, golden wreath as accessories, embellished headbands and eye-catching makeup really have all of us heading to Southeastern Europe for a holiday!

The Shoe Every Single One Of Us Has Probably Worn

It’s hard to look back at 90s nostalgia without recalling the all too familiar shoe brand Bata. Memories of strapping on those ubiquitous black school shoes, changing into white sneakers before running off to PT, and eagerly slipping on blue-strapped chappals when returning home come to mind when recollecting moments from our youth. From mom to the maid—Bata shoes were a closet staple for everyone in the family. Mainly, because they were the perfect everyday footwear: easily available, affordable, and comfortable.

Bata sent our Fashion & Beauty Director Meriam Ahari to Prague to learn more about the new direction the iconic shoe brand is taking. It turns out, she discovered much more than she anticipated.

Think you know Bata better than you know the lyrics to “Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana sanam”? Here are 8 things about the brand that just might surprise you:

1) Bata is actually pronounced Baht-ya.

2) Bata has been around since 1894. In fact, some of their oldest styles are still relevant today.

3) Bata created a shoe called Baťovka, which was revolutionary at the time because it was the first shoe that combined both leather and canvas.

4) The Bata family opened up a university called Tomas Bata University (located in Zlín) where they teach design, communication, business, and more.

5) Twenty million Indian girls are denied an education each year. Bata started the Bata Children’s Progam eight years ago that raises funds to help girls attend school and receive healthcare benefits. (For INR 3,300, one girl can attend school for an entire year).

The Bata Children’s Program provided a dental clinic at one of its adopted schools in Patna.

6) Most of us have spent our lives thinking Bata was a local Indian brand. Turns out, we aren’t the only ones who think Bata is homegrown. Many of the editors from Italy, Switzerland, and elsewhere (even from the small island of Mauritius) who attended Bata Fashion Weekend also believed that the shoe brand originated from their own country. Bata’s Head Of Global Marketing Jana Barbati Chadová weighs in, “The company is historical, it expanded many years ago and they had a really brilliant business strategy. They settled in various countries and started building a very strong presence in all regions.”

7) This month, Bata launched their first ever Young Designers Challenge in which they will manufacture the winning designs as part of a limited-edition collection. The winners of the 2017 challenge are Adam Kost and Linda Zabilkova.

8) Comfort has always been key for Bata, and even though the brand is pushing for a sexier image, their priority remains the same. “Launching soon is their Insolia technology which is geared toward making high heels more comfortable. Insolia technology creates better weight distribution so you don’t fall forward like you would in stilettos. Instead, you feel taller, posture is straightened, and you’ll experience less pain.”

Fashion sisters, Sonam Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor are all set to launch their own fashion brand, Rheson tomorrow. We are pretty sure most girls obsessed with fashion are ecstatic to get their hands on Rhea and Sonam’s collection – they are industry’s favourite fashion ladies, after all!

Naturally, the wait is palpable! The sisters will be present for the brand’s launch at the Inorbit mall, Malad, where girls are already camping in anticipation of a hefty dose of fashion! About this amazing response, Sonam said:

Oh my god, you guys! We are so overwhelmed, Rhea just told me we got a humongous response to the camp site at Shoppers Stop, Malad. So many that we actually had to close registrations. Thank you so much for the love you have shown to Rheson. Rhea and I both are going to be there tomorrow and we would really like to meet you all! The Dior Cruise 2018 show took place last evening and boy, oh boy was it a show! The fashion show was a two-day party extravaganza. We got to know this beauty and found out she’s as lovely on the inside as she is on the outside.

Have you always wanted to be a model?

No, I never wanted to be a model after seeing my friend trying to be one and not getting a good response. But few of my friends told me that I look like a model and I should try for this field. So, I was very thrilled to get a response from IMG and thought to myself that let’s give this a try!

How did you get signed by IMG? Did you audition or did someone discover you?

I was discovered by IMG model management via social media. I was overwhelmed and wondered if this is really true? When one of the top notch modelling agency representative tells you that you are cool enough to be a part of their agency, it’s definitely an amazing news! Especially, for a girl like me who’s been so tom boyish.

How does it make you feel to know you were picked up by the same agency that signed Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Gisele?

Obviously, I feel very proud. I am thankful to all the people who helped me to be a part of this prestigious agency and to be surrounded by such lovely people. My stay in London was one of the most awesome experiences of my life. All the things that I wanted to do like visiting Tower Bridge in windy weather, walking on Oxford Street and travelling in tube…. everything was new for me. I even got to meet some really nice people during my castings.

What was the most exciting shoot you’ve ever done?

So far, I have done just one shoot for i-D and it was pretty cool! The shoot was all about colourful clothes and coloured faces.

What is your dream modeling job? For what designer or magazine?

For runway it would be Victoria’s Secret and for magazine I want to be on the cover of Elle, Vogue (the list goes on…)

Do you have to diet or workout to stay fit?

I eat homemade food only. That just might be my diet secret.

What is the most difficult part about being a model?

To fit in any kind of clothes might be the hardest thing for me.

What is the best part about being a model?

I got to meet so many creative people and this has really helped me become more confident. The best thing is that you can start a conservation with any random person on any random topic. The most enthralling part is that you get to learn something new every day and I like to learn new things every second.

Do you get to travel a lot? Where have you traveled to?

Modelling means travelling a lot. I never left India before I moved to London and had to live there alone without my parents. The experience was life changing and incredible. I will thank IMG for everything. From my childhood days I wanted to visit all the places I see in newspapers and magazines. Now, I have seen some of the best places from that list!

If you ever quit modeling, what would you like to do instead?

Maybe, I would be an artist or a musician. I would like to be in movies too. Movies are the best storytellers and like every person in the world I like stories. In my school days I wanted to be a film director.

Which model is your inspiration?

Kate moss, Cara Delivigne and Miranda Kerr.

After blowing our minds at Cannes 2017, Sonam Kapoor decides to win our hearts with her Vogue cover for the June issue. She vibes so well in Gucci that stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania picks out for her. Celebrity hairstylist Gabriel Georgiou gives her hair an effortlessly chic look as he tucks in her hair under the jacket.  Her makeup looks flawless with deep undertones of brown done by Subbu.

You’ll Never Believe Who Collaborated with Falguni & Shane Peacock On Their Newest Collection

The third creative mind behind Falguni & Shane Peacock’s newest collection is one we’d least expect—mostly because it’s not the mind of a person, but of an artificial intelligence! This A.I.—IBM Watson—is trained to analyze multiple sources of data from a given time period, and in turn, churn out a report of the most predominant colors, silhouettes, styles, prints, and textures present.

When IBM approached the design duo to create a collection with the help of this artificial intelligence, their vision was clear—to devise the “Future of Bollywood Fashion.” Using Watson, Falguni & Shane Peacock were able to study the rich history of Bollywood fashion to help them predict the direction in which the industry is moving.

To begin, Watson analyzed 600,000 runway images from the last ten years of London, Paris, Milan, and New York Fashion Week combined, to give the designers an overall understanding of global fashion trends. To interpret styles solely from Bollywood, IBM Watson also studied 5,000 images of Bollywood celebrities from different social media sites, as well as fashion imagery from 3,000 movie posters.

Much like how Facebook recognizes human faces, Watson uses “Visual Recognition” to isolate humans from an image and identify the clothes they are wearing – more specifically, prints, colours, and styles.

For example, when Falguni & Shane wanted to create a colour palette reminiscent of 80s Bollywood fashion, they put Watson to work, analyzing films from the 1980s like Mr.India, Qayamat Se QayamatTak, and Maine PyarKiya. Watson’s findings determined that styles from the 80s were commonly worn in shades of licorice, brown yellow, black olive, dark vanilla and camouflage green.

What makes this technology so advantageous is that it conducts thorough research (that would typically take someone months to complete) and presents its findings in a matter of minutes.

Shane Peacock made an interesting observation, “Fashion is usually considered a right-brain activity. So it was very interesting to approach it from a left-brain perspective of logic and data. The data presented by IBM Watson helped us look at the insights as a springboard for our thoughts and helped us think in newer directions!”

With the time and manpower this program saves, it’s not far-fetched to think that fashion designers will consult Watson’s data analysis skills when designing their collections. After all, fashion has proven to be cyclical—constantly referencing styles defined by an era like 70s bell-bottoms, 80s off-shoulder tops, and even those 90s Doc Martens we were convinced would never make a comeback.
