Rick Roy with Humaima Malik

Rick Roy with Humaima Malik

Even though he may not be a household name (“I’m too shy to be out there and in your face”, he confesses), costume designer Rick Roy has done a sizeable amount of work in Bollywood and reveals that he prefers to let his work, “Speak for itself!”

Having designed costumes for well-known films like Joker, Jannat 2, Inkaar and Himmatwalla in the past, Rick’s designs will next been seen on the big screen on Emraan Hashmi, Humaima Malik and Paresh Rawal in Raja Natwarlal which releases on August 29th 2014.

In an exclusive conversation with Team MissMalini, Rick Roy, discusses the look he planned for the stars and even shares some exclusive sketches from his sketch pad.

Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi

Team MissMalini: What is the storyline of Raja Natwarlal?

Rick Roy: The story revolves around a conman played by Emraan Hashmi, who is out to seek revenge because his partner in crime gets killed. Humaima Malik plays the role of a bar dancer and expectedly, she is his love interest.

Team MM: How is Emraan’s conman look different from those we have already seen on the big screen in Bollywood?

RR: First of all, the director Kunal Deshmukh told me that he didn’t want the look to be too dark. He didn’t want Emraan’s look to be gritty. In fact, I was specifically told that the clothes must stand out. They should be clothes that people could relate to.

Kunal wanted a flashy look because Emraan’s character uses his flashy demeanour to impress people. Hence, the flashy look is important to the script. He dresses up to look cool and also to impress the character played by Humaima.

Humaima Malik

Humaima Malik

Team MM: What about Humaima’s bar girl look? How is that different?

RR: Again, Kunal didn’t want the kind of raw, real-life look which you saw in films like Chandini Bar. He wanted Humaima’s character to look super glam and not tacky. Getting that perfect balance was tricky but since she’s so incredibly beautiful, just about everything I dressed her in looked fabulous on her.

You’ll see her wearing long flowing skirts and deep-cut cholis but they are not overtly bling like one sees the girls wearing in actual dance bars.

Team MM: Tell us about a fun anecdote from the sets.

RR: The look for Emraan was in my head and I knew exactly how I wanted the shirts to be done, along with the matching glares. But I wasn’t getting the exact references to show Kunal. So what I did was that I made a sample of the shirt, bought the right accessories I wanted including the matching glares and boots. Then, I personally wore it all, exactly the way I wanted Raja to look on screen and I came for a meeting to the production office. Everyone was the conference room and I just walked in, all blinged out, and told them that this is the look I want for Raja in the movie.

No prizes for guessing that they all burst in to laughter. They literally cracked up. Of course, they loved the look and  approved everything instantly.

Team MM: What about Paresh Rawal’s styling for the film?

RR: He plays the role of a man from the mountains and hence, the best part was going all the way to Dharamshala to shop for his look from the locals. Unfortunately, we don’t have any promotional stills of him t share with your readers but when you see the film, you will totally identify with his look.

Nikhil Thampi

Nikhil Thampi

Whether you know your designers or not, Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Tarun Tahiliani and such others are household desi names that are so respected today, to wear their designs would be a dream for millions of people all over the world. While that generation of designers doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere, a new crop of fashion innovators and creators have cropped up and maybe, in the future, their names might become as regular and spoken about as their seniors today. Some of the names in the list I’m about to share with you are so new, they’ve only had maybe one or two shows, while the others have just about learnt the ropes and seem to be taking all the right steps. Here are 10 homegrown and desi designers everyone should know about.

1. Nikhil Thampi

Sonakshi Sinha in Nikhil Thampi

With a huge fan following, Thampi is one desi designer we wouldn’t be surprised to see on the International red carpets soon.

2. Dhruv Kapoor

Another designer who’s favoured by celebrities, Arpita Mehta started out with an internship with design God, Manish Malhotra himself. Her collections, complete with intricate embroidery and attractive silhouettes are generally infused with her signature mirror work embellishments and are a fun take on the regular fusion and traditional wear you see otherwise.

Ladies, Meet Jackie Soft. Gucci’s New Bag Line.

Gucci's 'Jackie Soft' handbag range

The ‘Jackie Soft’ handbag range

There’s no denying that Gucci makes lust-worthy handbags but they are not really my cup of tea, for one reason or the other. That though is set to change when the Autumn/Winter’14 collection hits the stores. And the reason being, its iconic ‘Jackie’ bag got bit of a makeover — to some nifty results.

Gucci's 'Jackie Soft' shoulder bags

Gucci's 'Jackie Soft' Hobo bags

The ‘Jackie Soft’ Hobo bags

Called the ‘Jackie Soft’, it comes in five different styles and a myriad of colours, ranging from the sophisticated and classic black, nut brown, camel, mystic white and stone to the fresh and bright eucalyptus, cerulean, aqua, new pink, rosy blush, rose baby candy, chardonnay, aquamarine and dark zest. The materials used for the range include grained and natural Grand Prix leather, which allows unlined construction and confers softness and lightness. The bags would also come in python, crocodile and leopard-printed pony skin for the ultra rich :-p.

I’m coveting the Jackie Soft tote: the boxy, roomy number in one of the pastel colours with no visible branding and minimal hardware is just so me. #iamalogophobe

And I am presuming Gucci wants to give the range the best shot at becoming a smash hit, as it’s set to roll out a massive ad campaign for it featuring… KATE MOSS!!!

What do you think? Major bag lust, or you’ll let this one pass?

Alia Bhatt for Maybelline

First of all, Alia Bhatt looks absolutely stunning in this campaign! With her wine-coloured lips and gold-lined eyes, she gives off a total grunge vibe! Although we love her usual girl-next-door or dazzling diva looks, we’ve got to admit that this edgy look of hers is our favourite!

Exclusive: “Designing for London Fashion Week is No Easy Task”– Delna Poonawalla Reveals

Delna Poonawalla

Delna Poonawalla

I have known Delna Poonawalla ever since she made her design debut back in the 90s at a multi-designer store in Mumbai called Purple Porcupine, the brainchild of designer and stylist, Niharika Khan. What immediately impressed me about her collection were the sarees with slashes all over them. Back then, it was a novel idea and the only couture sarees one could really buy were the heavily embroidered ones by Tarun Tahiliani and his ilk. Hence, Delna’s punk idea was very out-of-the-box and refreshing and had me keenly follow her evolution as a designer, over the years.

Delna is now winging her way to London to take part for the first time at the prestigious London Fashion Week, later this month. She took part in Lakme Fashion Week last season in Mumbai but tells us, “I studied fashion in London and have spent a lot of time there. Hence, this city holds a special place in my heart.”

In an exclusive interview with Team MissMalini, Delna talks about her collection for this globally famous event and the difficulties she faced in putting it all together.

A jumpsuit by Delna Poonawalla for London Fashion Week

A jumpsuit by Delna Poonawalla for London Fashion Week

Team MM: What made you decide to go international with London Fashion Week this year?
Delna Poonawalla: I was invited by the organizers of the event to show. It happened quite suddenly and I believe it has come to me at the right place and the right time. Presenting at a fashion week is something I regard with great respect. Being a part of it means being a part of the fashion world and that my designs and work are appreciated by a larger and vast audience. I also studied fashion in London and have spent a lot of time there. Hence, it holds a special place in my heart. Showing at London Fashion Week means the world to me.

Team MM: What is the collection about, in terms of inspirations, fabrics, ornamentation, accessories, etc?
DP: The collection is about my connect to spirituality and using that as inspiration to create a kaleidoscope through linear geometric patterns. To incorporate this, I worked on a print, where I mirror-imaged each piece in the finest detail with a mix of fluid layering as well as some very structured pieces. Colour blocking continues to be a theme for me, though this time, I have mixed it with prints using colours of the seven chakras – violet and blue being the highest energy that enters through the crown, to baby pink which is the colour of true love and the heart chakra. I have used raised bugle beads to highlight the beautiful geometric prints as well as different leather techniques.

A print for a jacket by Delna Poonawalla

A print for a jacket by Delna Poonawalla

Attention to detail is paramount in terms of finishing, which includes a paper pattern for each individual piece (as the print is designed to fit the exact width of a jacket or top for example, while a dress may use the pattern differently). The lining is also printed in my running logo and each garment has to be sent twice to the embroiderers, as all the leather trimmings are attached on the garment once it is completely ready, for a perfect finish.

The print, in its combination with solid pastel colours, speaks of a modern collection yet keeping in tune with my inherent culture, and that is what truly inspires me.

Footwear by Delna Poonawalla

Footwear by Delna Poonawalla

I have also paid a great deal of attention to my accessories, and specially designed shoes and wrist bands to go with the collection. The shoes and bands are colour blocked in pink, grey and white leather. Again, we have used different skin effects and peek-a-boo cut outs, giving them an edge.

Team MM: What are the difficulties you have faced in this endeavour?
DP: It has been a challenge since I have used many different techniques, the mirror imaging has been no easy task, as colours and prints have to be put together seamlessly. We had to work on getting the colours right, as they had to coordinate with the chakra colours. The garments had to go back and forth into embroidery for the leather trimmings to get attached, which is time consuming.

A good team is very important, and not to be able to take the entire team to London makes it a tough task to handle.

Footwear by Delna Poonawalla

Footwear by Delna Poonawalla

Team MM: How is the process different from taking part in a local Indian fashion week?
DP: We are a select contingent of Indian designers who have been invited for the show. It has been a wonderful experience interacting with the organizers of the event and we look forward to the platform it will provide us. I wouldn’t say there is much difference in the process of taking part although some procedures are different. Our Indian Fashion weeks have a very professional approach, especially my interaction with Lakme Fashion Week recently. All in all, it’s a pleasurable experience.

Team MM: Where will this collection be available for purchase?
DP: The collection will be available at my studio located at Worli and for online purchase through my Facebook page. Aside from that, I will also be stocking at a few selected stores around India and internationally as well.

Prior to the release of their film Khoobsurat, Fawad Khan and Sonam Kapoor have been promoting it in a number of cities in the country. Yesterday evening, they were spotted at the airport returning from Indore. While I would generally fawn over Sonam’s perfect airport looks, this time, I got a bit distracted. Take a look at all the hotness that was accompanying her.

I know I know this news is now old, but do you blame us for not getting over how adorable Angelina Jolie’s wedding dress is? In case you have been living under a really heavy rock, we told you that after 9 years of being together, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie decided to formalize their relationship and got married in France! Details about the intimate, low key wedding can be found here, as I’m just here to talk about how pretty her wedding dress is! Celebrated designer Luigi Massi of Atelier Versace created the gown, and sewed designs based on Angelina and Brad’s kids’ drawings into the train and veil.

Angelina and Brad

Courtesy: hellomagazine.com

Luigi is like family to me and I couldn’t imagine anyone else making this dress, he knows and cares for the children and it was great fun putting it together.” Angelina told People Magazine. People also revealed the Jolie-Pitt kids helped write their parents’ vows, and Maddox, 13, and Pax, 10, walked Angelina down the aisle; Zahara, 9, and Vivenne, 6, were flower girls; and Shiloh, 8, and Knox, 6, were ring bearers.
Now where are the damn tissues when you need them?

Finding Fanny is all set to release and as I write this, screenings are being held left, right and centre. Last night was one such screening and a whole chunk of Bollywood showed up. Among these were the stars of the whole show, Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor. And aptly dressed as the main lead, Deepika showed up in gold. Wearing a Monisha Jaising metallic top and a pair of blue denims from Topshop, she topped off the look with Christian Louboutin pointy toe pumps and matching red lips.

Deepika Padukone

As much as I love the top, I wish the jeans were skinny and cropped rather than flared and long. But apart from that, her top pretty much stole the show. I bet no one even looked at the jeans. Arjun however, looked dapper as ever in a suit…

10 Most Fashionable ALS Ice Bucket Challenges

Ice Bucket Challenge meme

Ice Bucket Challenge meme

When the ‘Ice Age’ descended onto the fashion world with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the fashionistas took it upon them to amaze the world with their chicest take on it and sent out nominations for a good cause (hey, they donated too!!). If you are unaware of what the social media ecosphere has been gabbing about for the past few weeks, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is a lethal neurodegenerative disease. Individuals living with the disease become gradually paralysed due to erosion of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Statistics say 80% of individuals with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis.

On a more livelier note, watch some of the swankiest videos from the fashion race here:

1. Anna Wintour

All ‘ICE’ the Queen of Vogue!

2.Tom Ford

The Trendiest Man on earth, gets iced up, cowboy style!

3.Donatella Versace

Being fashionably ICY? This was truly a luscious affair.

4.Mario Testino

Fashions main photographer shoots some ICE!

5. The Beckham’s

The famjam’s modishness on an ICE ramp-age.

6. Cara Delevingne

It’s an ICY treat for fashion’s it-girl!

7. Stella McCartney

Stella feels a “rush of ICE to the head” along side Chris Martin

8. Kate Moss

It was all ICE on the beach for this supermodel.

9. Gisele Bundchen

Olá! Watch the Brazilian supermodel stage an ICE-Ecology at her best!

Although the Ice-Bucket Challenge has died down, the world is still digging these amusing videos from fashions side.

Oh wait! We just spotted Kim Kardashian take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on The Ellen Show. This might really be the best selfie that the diva has ever taken! Certainly cannot wait for this one.

What’s your take on the #IceBucketChallenge ?

Taylor Swift in Mary Katrantzou (Pic | Image Collect)

Taylor Swift just seems to be getting racier by the day! Although I must say, unlike Miley Cyrus, Tay Tay seems to be taking it real slow. She started with performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and slowly and steadily, with her clothes and even otherwise, let people know she wasn’t just Miss Goody Two Shoes, there was more to her. Today, after looking at this magazine cover, you’ll know for sure that Taylor is on her way to the dark side and so far, she’s been making the transition super smooth. See for yourself…

Drenched from head to… I can’t really see what but I’m guessing, toe, Swift made it to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in a very see though (that’s what happens when it’s wet) white tank and a pair of jeans. You know how much we love those (not necessarily wet!). Here’s another one from the shoot…

Apple iWatch

Um, right now, my watch has seen what this new Apple one can do and is probably not feeling very confident about itself. Apple launched their new products, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last night, along with this tiny accessory that, iPhone/fitness addict, or not, you’re going to want it! While I on the other hand, am looking at this from a very fashionable perspective – Just look how pretty!!

Apple iWatch

Apple iWatch

In the line of work I’m in, the more tech friendly everything around me is, the better. I’m constantly checking my phone for e-mails, Instagrams (that’s my news source), my texts and a whole load of other things and I’m not going to lie, the people I’m with often get annoyed about it – so if I can do all this, without taking my phone out of my back pocket, that will be just perfect, thank you very much!

Watch what it can do here…

Plus, it isn’t some ugly, clunky thing that takes away from the over all style of your outfit. With changeable straps and displays and the sleek exterior of the watch, this is something I would wear and totally flaunt! It’s technology and it’s so fashionable, I can’t handle it.

Apple iWatch

Apple iWatch

And they know one size can’t fit all, so they’ve actually made two sizes depending on how big it looks on your wrist. Oh Apple, you really think of everything don’t you?

How excited are you to get your hands on this? Early 2015 guys… start saving now!

Just about a week left for Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan‘s Khoobsurat to hit the theatres and they’ve been everywhere promoting it. From colleges and malls to the sets of TV shows and radio stations – these two are pulling out the big guns! So we all know her character is a misfit in the movie. She’s klutzy, says things she shouldn’t and her clothes are as bright as her personality. So while she’s been talking about the movie, she’s dressed in character but retains some of that Sonam Kapoor-ness we can all identify from a mile away. Yesterday, she played Milli AND Sonam, in one day. Here’s Milli…

Wearing a stripped skirt and tribal crop top by Easton Pearson, she mixed prints like a pro and threw on a chunky necklace and a muted jacket to add some balance. Colourful like Milli.

But then, at night, for another round of promotions, just like magic, she’s Sonam again! See…

Wearing a sequinned plum coloured Bhibhu Mohapatra dress, her outfit is fit for a royal – Fawad Khan would definitely approve.

Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone was spotted – along with Finding Fanny co-star Arjun Kapoor - shooting for an upcoming episode of television serial Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. We couldn’t help but notice that she paired her bodycon dress with metallic pumps that were very similar to the pair we saw Alia Bhatt don at a recent press meet (Deepika herself has worn this pair of shoes before). The question is, which of these two very popular actors pulled off the look best? Take a look at photos below and let us know what you think!

Jennifer Lopez

With a case of Angelina Jolie‘s majorly exposed leg, Jennifer Lopez stepped out on to the red carpet at Fashion Rocks 2014 which was held at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn last evening. Black and gold being my absolute go-to combination, when I saw the Versace dress she wore, my jaw dropped. Here take a look…

Now this isn’t something I would recommend for anyone because let’s be honest, do you know anyone else who can pull off that neckline AND that leg at the same time? Need another look?

Large gold hoops, a gold box clutch, gold rings and black pumps finished off her look and I love that she pulled her hair back in a tight ponytail, this way letting the dress bask in the limelight – as it should.

What do you think? Like it, or is it too much? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below.

Nargis Fakhri

Nargis Fakhri

Hey Nargis, did you forget your wallet at home? Never mind your dress will cover it! Sorry I couldn’t resist. Nargis Fakhri was out yesterday launching a skincare brand and I had to really zoom into the outfit she was wearing to believe it.

Is it really embellished with one Rupee coins or are my eyes still deceiving me? I love those shoes though, her makeup is flawless and her hair looks great too!

Nargis Fakhri

If someone could just explain the dress to me, that would be great, thank you! :)

UPDATE: Someone just informed me that the skincare sachet she was launching costs Re. 1 – Well, that explains it, I guess.

Is Kangana Ranaut’s Dress Too Risqué Or Dangerously Sexy?

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut looks like she’s daring you to pass a comment on the dress she wore at the Jagran Film Festival held yesterday. In an embellished creation from Gucci’s pre-fall collection, she paired the dress with black boots, also from Gucci, and wing-tipped eyes with a slick side parted hair do. Standing straight, she looks great, a little intimidating, but so great! What we’re trying to come to a conclusion about are the slits on the side of her dress. Take a look…

Kangana Ranaut

Now don’t think she has no clue about the slits or she’s forgotten to wear the pants that might go with it. The Gucci number comes exactly like this…

Here’s what we think. It doesn’t look obscene, it doesn’t make us cringe and frankly, Queen Ranaut can wear whatever she wants and get away with it – we dare you to ask her to do any different!

So while we’re going with dangerously sexy, tell us if you think anyone else can pull this look off in the comments below.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma

An Insider just sent across some, well, inside information about Anushka Sharma and we just can’t get over it! Anushka is in London right now, go on, ask me why. Never mind, I’ll tell you anyway. Burberry invited Anushka to watch their Spring/Summer 2015 show at Somerset House during London Fashion Week and since she decided to attend, she went aptly dressed head to toe in Burberry. Look…

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma

In a navy blue full sleeved dress, she multi-layered like a pro with a scarf tucked under a perfectly knotted belt. A green tote and floral printed booties finished her look. Doesn’t she look like perfection? Here’s another, rather blurry, picture.

Right now, if she keeps this up, Anushka might just overthrow Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor‘s reign over Bollywood’s fashionable throne. Here’s hoping Anushka is another super fashionista in the making.

Loving her look as much as I am? Tell me in the comments below.
