Wendell Rodricks at Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2019

A day that starts with Sushmita Sen sashaying down the runway, is indeed destined to be special. And that’s exactly how the day 2 of Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2019 turned out to be. Full of fantasy and mesmerising sartorial details, designers managed to bring out the best of summer style. Here’s a quick glance at how the day took an ethereal turn:

Abstract by Megha

The collection relishes the summer goodness through light fabrics and fresh colours. Sophie Choudry concluded this pretty lineup in a draped green and grey ensemble that looked stunning on her.

Bhumika & Jyoti

Green and white colour palette made for a dramatic combination on the runway via some amazing easy-breezy silhouettes. But what really stunned us was Sushmita Sen‘s charming entry in a floaty off-shoulder dress.

Vidhi Wadhwani

The new spring/summer collection by Vidhi Wadhwani was called Ikigai, which means ‘Reason For Being’ in Japanese. This minimalistic collection was inspired by the designer’s recent trip to Japan. Diana Penty played the role of the muse and walked down the runway as a showstopper in an all-white ensemble.

Aartivijay Gupta

Through the designer’s signature prints, tribal life is depicted on modern silhouettes. Woven fabrics took the form of the mud walls and the was inspired by the wall arts as seen in Rajasthan.

Shruti Sancheti

Reminiscing the vibes of the British quaint parks and celebrating the summer feels, Shruti Sancheti’s collection was quintessential sunny weather. Subtle hues of ivory cream, duck egg blue, apricot orange, mustard yellow, sage green, berry milkshake pinks and teal blue made a cohesive lineup.

Prashant Verma

Surrealism took a new form through Prashant Verma’s collection of flouncy, billowy silhouettes and meshy headgears. It would be unfair to call it a lineup as it looked like an art presentation on the runway that simply took our breath away.

Nitin Bal Chauhan

“The Gatekeeper” collection was all about the opulence and prowess of old kingdoms. The modern silhouettes have a rich overlay of gold 3D embroidery, whereas the headgears were inspired by vintage bonnets & hats.

Mr. Sunil Sethi, President FDCI with the designers at the Finale LMIFW SS'19

A lot was riding on the final day of Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2019. It all came down to setting the right tone for the upcoming season. The finale went even beyond that and reflected the notion of inclusivity that we all were striving for this year. Here’s a glimpse into what all went down on day 4 of LMIFW:

Nirmooha by Prreeti Jain Nainutia

Rivaayat collection was an indigenous lineup, which was all about showcasing traditional art and handloom of India. Madhubani hand painting found a new canvas on modern silhouettes, while it worked as a beautiful contrast to woven linen sarees. Gauahar Khan looked fabulous in a contemporary desi avatar as she walked the ramp.

Swati Vijaivargie

Swati Vijaivargie’s Spring/Summer2019 collection, In Bloom, was an interpretation of the Scandinavian textiles through the different techniques of block & screen printing enhanced with Resham, Ari and hand twisted Patwa strings. The cool colour palette was in sync with the happy summer vibes and hand a base of fabrics like Chanderi, Khadi, Linen satin, handwoven silks and Mulmul.

Anushree Reddy

Designer Anushree Reddy brought her feminine floral aesthetics to Delhi with her debut showcase at Lotus Makeup India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2019. The collection, Vintage Rose, showcased a line up of soothing colours like muted pink, lemon yellow and beige that were the base for designer’s signature floral prints.

Dhruv Kapoor

Androgynous dressing never looked this cool! Dhruv Kapoor’s New-Butch collection was all about inclusivity and modern direction of silhouettes. The oversized, easy shapes took over the runway in form of ethnic patchwork print on Japanese silk, vivid stripes, industrial twills, and heavy-textured ta‑eta with vibrant handcrafted embroidery. Plus, those slouchy hats were quintessential summer.

Rainbow Show

It was a grand finale, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. The Rainbow show was a tribute to the historic judgement by the Supreme Court of India of repealing this draconian law of article 377. The theme of love is love was interpreted by around 40 designers from across the country. The designers that made this a great success were Abhishek Gupta , Abraham & Thakore, Alpana Neeraj, AM:PM, Amit Aggarwal, Anavila, Arjun Khanna, Arjun Saluja, Ashish N Soni, Atsu, Dev r Nil, Dhruv Kapoor, Gaurav Gupta, Huemn, Ikai by Ragini Ahuja, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Kommal Sood, Manish Malhotra, Manoviraj Khosla, Mynah‘s Reynu Taandon, Namrata Joshipura, Nandita Basu, Nitin Bal Chauhan, Pankaj & Nidhi, Payal Jain, Poonam Bhagat, Rabani & Rakha, Raghavendra Rathore, Rahul Mishra, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Rimzim Dadu, Rina Dhaka, Samant Chauhan, Shivan & Narresh, Siddartha Tytler, Suneet Verma, Varun Bahl, Vineet Bahl, Vivek Karunakaran and Wendell Rodricks. If you’ve never heard of Virgil Abloh, now’s the time to familiarise yourself with that name—because he’s getting big in the fashion world. The designer who was previously a DJ, architect, artist and recently appointed as the head of Louis Vuitton‘s menswear line is probably on top of the world right now. His streetwear brand Off-White has been named the hottest fashion label worldwide according to Lyst Index’s report that came out earlier this week—leaving big boys like Gucci, Prada, and Balenciaga behind.

According to reports, Off-White leads the way by having 3 of their products on the ‘hottest products list’ out of the 20 entries. The 5.4 million Instagram following is a result of the out-of-the-box and avant-garde spin on street style, making it red carpet-worthy as well. From the biggest international personalities wearing these designs to some pretty insane collaborations with bigger fashion houses, Off-White has cemented itself as the most coveted and talked about brand this year.

Here’s Why We’re Excited To See Sabyasachi On The #LadkiWale Side At #DeepVeer’s Wedding

There was no doubt in our minds that designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be playing an intrinsic role in the #DeepVeer wedding. To say that Deepika Padukone is just a muse to Sabyasachi Mukherjee is now an understatement. We all know that she has a special preference for the designer’s creation. But now it’s clear to us that it is more of a fam-jam vibe between the two of them, and yesterday’s picture that was on our Instagram feed is a proof. Celebrity stylist Gabriel Georgiou shared this warm photo of the #LadkiWale in a pagadi, featuring the renowned designer.

Everyone already knew that Deepika would be the perfect #SabyasachiBride! But when Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh‘s first pictures landed on our feed, we were completely blown away, to say the least. That’s where we first saw the ultimate presence of the designer but little did we know then that he was also invited to the wedding. Their head-to-toe Sabyasachi ensembles were stunning, and we couldn’t believe the mesmerising details of the dupatta that we bet Sabyasachi Mukherjee had especially taken into consideration while designing Deepika’s bridal look.

Also, through his Instagram account, we got to know that even their looks in their latest photos from the chooda ceremony were from Sabyasachi!

We can’t wait for more details on both of their wedding attires as we’re expecting it to be revealed to us soon, hopefully via Sabyasachi Mukherjee on his ‘gram. Are you excited to know all the details too? If yes then do share your excitement with us in the comments below!

Meghan Markle Honours Her Royal Wedding Dress Designer In The Sweetest Way

There’s nothing that means more to us than seeing women empower women and share in their success. Giving us more reason to believe in #GirlLove is the testament of friendship we saw on the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards stage. Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex surprised her wedding dress designer, Claire Waight Keller, the Creative Director of luxury fashion label, Givenchy with a prestigious award.

Meghan was the surprise presenter for the evening. She was dressed in a one-shoulder black dress from the same luxury label as she presented the award to her dear friend and wedding dress designer for British Designer Of The Year, Womenswear. The friendship they shared was evidently seen as the two shared a laugh and warm hugs on the Fashion Awards stage. But what hit us in the feels the most was this snippet from Duchess’ speech for Claire Waight Keller.

“Sometimes it’s very personal, sometimes it’s emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in really being able to understand that it’s about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women. When we choose to wear a certain designer, we’re not just a reflection of their creativity and their vision but we’re also an extension of their values of something in the fabric, so to speak, that is much more meaningful.”

The award honoured Clare for her significant contribution to the industry this year and was chosen as best womenswear designer for the year 2018, as chosen by a panel of over two thousand industry experts. With Meghan cheering her on and her ace style sensibilities we’re sure, Claire Waight Keller will continue to be on top of the fashion game.

Now isn’t this the sweetest thing you’ve read today?

Here’s Why 2018 Was An Important Year For Ethical Fashion

PETA (Source: www.shutterstock.com)

Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right.

It was somewhere in March 2018 when Italian design house Versace announced it will no longer use real fur in their designs & creative director Donatella Versace quoted the above in an interview for 1843 magazine. It was a sensationalising news for the fashion industry coming from a luxe brand like this one and a right step towards ethical fashion. But little did we know that it was just a start. In September, the British Fashion Council (BFC) announced that London Fashion Week would be the first large-scale fashion week to ditch animal fur completely. Recently, Chanel became the first luxury brand to give up the use of exotic animal pelts such as crocodile, lizard, and snakeskin.

PETA has played an important role in this change of direction. Some designers like Stella McCartney always believed in the sustainable fashion. But many others were persuaded by PETA to go the conscious way.

But ethical fashion is way beyond just being fur-free! Ethical Fashion Forum actually categorises ethical fashion in three sets: social, environmental and commercial. So, it’s not just the environmental threats the fashion industry needs to work towards. The social and commercial implications are as detrimental too.

In September for the #BoF500 Print Edition of Business Of Fashion, they featured Kalpona Akter, the founder and director of the Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity (BCWS). She has been an integral part of the labour moment and an important person to talk against the slave-labour of the clothing industry. To have such a personality on the cover of an iconic platform was another win for ethical fashion. It gave a new voice and an international platform for these issues to come into focus.

With now more awareness about the implications of fast fashion amongst the general public, it is safe to assume that though we’re late, we still can change the direction that leads to destruction. Even a fast fashion brand like H&M has taken up the steps towards sustainability with its H&M Conscious Exclusive.

This year surely has been a stepping stone towards the greater good and now the only way forward is conscious, sustainable and ethical fashion.

7 Fashion Scandals That Showed Us The Dark Side Of The Fashion World

People Tree | Image Source: Facebook - @orijit.sen

The fashion world is ever-changing, and the need to be at the top is real. From making sure their brands are always trending to staying at the top of their game, in this journey to the top, many brands have lost sight of morals and values. 2018, especially has shown us some extremely shocking moments of racism, cultural appropriation and body shaming. Keep scrolling to see the moments that shocked us.

1. Dolce & Gabbana’s China Fashion Showcase

Following a controversial advertisement on Dolce & Gabbana‘s social media accounts as well as its Weibo account in China, media professionals, celebrities and influencers boycotted the show on the grounds of racism. So much so that more than 120 million people posted their dismay using the hashtag #BoycottDolce and the show was called off hours before it was scheduled to begin.

2. Sabyasachi’s Saree Controversy

The ace bridal designer was invited to attend a talk at the Harvard India Conference, where he made a comment which invited negative attention across social media. Here’s what he said:

I think, if you tell me that you do not know how to wear a saree, I would say shame on you. It’s a part of your culture, (you) need stand up for it.

Many social media personalities and influencers including Masaba Gupta called him out for this statement. But he soon took to Instagram and apologised for his statement. He said…

What was intended to be a comment on celebration of our clothing history and heritage became a debate on feminism. This is not a gender issue. Since the question was about the saree, women were involved. I would take the same stand on men’s national clothing too. I have not made any statement on a woman’s choice on what she wishes to wear which is always her own prerogative.

3. Louis Vuitton Dupes

In January on 2018, all eyes were on the Oberoi Hotel in Nariman Point, Mumbai as the store got busted for selling fake Louis Vuitton merchandise. After duped customers complained about their products, the police got involved and raided the store, confiscating a total of 62 bags that cost approximately ₹4,47,000.

4. The Dior-People Tree Controversy

ELLE India‘s January cover faced a lot of heat. The first issue of the year had Sonam Kapoor Ahuja on it wearing a Dior dress that brought the plagiarism to the limelight. Soon we got to know that the print used on that dress was actually owned by an Indian homegrown brand called People Tree.

5. The Gucci Fall 2018 RTW Showcase

Punjabis and Sikhs all over the world were enraged after Gucci‘s Fall 2018 Ready-To-Wear showcase. The show had models wearing turbans as an accessory and was called out for their clear cultural appropriation.

6. H&M‘s Racist Kidswear Advertisement

H&M put out an advertisement earlier this year that showcased both an African-American child as well as an American kid. The African American kid was wearing a sweatshirt that said “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle”, whereas the American kid’s sweatshirt said “Mangrove Jungle Survival Expert”. All of Twitter and Instagram lost its cool, and The Weeknd also tweeted publicly and made a promise to never work with the brand again.

7. Victoria’s Secret Transgender Model Comment

In a day and age where lines of gender are blurring across industries, it came as a shock to us when we saw CMO of Limited Brands Ed Razek‘s comment on transgender models being in Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Here’s what he had to say,

“It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this? Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.”

He later apologised for his comment but that didn’t do much as many of Victoria’s Secret‘s avid followers were already quite ticked off.

ZARA Changed Its Logo, So You Better Hold On To Your Now-‘Vintage’ Tags

As we speak, hundreds and thousands of people are looking down at their phones in dismay, shock, awe, excitement, and possibly creating memes over ZARA’s new logo change. The world’s largest apparel retailer, ZARA was founded in 1975, and by 2019 has amassed huge success to become a global fashion powerhouse.

Today with more than 170,000 employees, 7,400 stores worldwide and over 49 online markets, ZARA‘s latest logo change comes with a lot of stir in the fashion industry. And while it is common for retailers to change their logos, ZARA‘s new branding and approach is well, not quite what we expected…

The curvy new logo was launched with their Spring/Summer 2019 campaign. ZARA‘s ability to keep up with the rapidly changing fashion styles and trends called for an over all can hange in the brand’s logo and website detailing as well. The website now features a different vibe and colour combination with the women’s section in yellow font and the men’s in an electric blue, as opposed to their classic black and white.

Every fashionista’s favourite diet, Diet Prada also weighed in on the matter earlier today, making a very compelling point about ZARA‘s similarity to BAZAAR‘s logo.

Oh and let’s not forget about the influx of memes to be seen on our feed…

While this change isn’t met with warm welcomes yet, we feel like the new logo is something that we will all adjust to even though we’re in two minds right now.

Would you want to bring back the old logo? Let us know by commenting below!

Proof That Fashion Week Is THE Place To Go For Your Celebrity Fix

$

Twice a year, we get to experience 5 days of fashion thanks to Lakme Fashion Week and of course, everyone goes for the fashion, but tbh they stay for the celebrities. Day zero kicked off with an offsite show courtesy Gaurav Gupta at the very beautiful Opera House in town. What made it even more special is the fact that none other than Tabu opened the show…

And Karan Johar proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he could be a professional showstopper if he suddenly got tired of making movies.

That got us heady enough, but then before we had time to catch our breath, Day 1 began and so did the onslaught of celebrity sightings. But hey, you won’t catch us complaining!

Day 1 & 2

Yami Gautam walked (or should I say strutted) for Gauri & Nainika

?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=fsmt68biorsr

Day 2 also had the very pretty Evelyn Sharma step out into the sunshine and walk for Doodlage’s pretty, feminine collection.

And since Day 2 was Sustainable Fashion Day, LFW also hosted what they called the Circular Design Challenge, for which Neha Dhupia was part of the panel looking fly as hell, obvz.

Karl Otto Lagerfeld, one of the most legendary men in the fashion industry has passed away at the age of 85. He was the creative director of both, the French luxury fashion house Chanel as well as of the Italian fur and leather goods fashion house Fendi. He has been the reason behind some of the most popular fashion trends in the world today. Although he came from a humble background, he grew to make a name not only for himself but also shouldered many brands, making them world-renown. His biggest success being Chanel.

While the cause of his death still remains unknown, some reports state that Karl Lagerfeld passed away from ill health. Keeping this in mind, we can’t help but reflect on how for the first time in history he didn’t attend Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2019 Haute Couture showcase that happened earlier last month. Instead, the bow at the Grand Palais was taken by Virginie Viard, the brand’s fashion studio director.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends. The industry will always have a void no one else can fill but his contribution and passion towards fashion will live on for years to come.

RIP, Karl Lagerfeld.

The legendary Karl Otto Lagerfeld passed away on 19th February 2019 and the fashion world will never be the same again. He was the creative director of the French fashion house Chanel, Fendi and also the head of his own brand Karl Lagerfeld. His contribution and passion for fashion have majorly defined what the luxury fashion industry is today. But that’s not all that he will be remembered for! Anyone who knew him or read about him, as a person, knew how enigmatic he was. These ten quotes serve as perfect proof, read on!

1. On His Childhood

When I was four I asked my mother for a valet for my birthday.

2. On Sweatpants

Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.

3. On Solidarity

I live in a set, with the curtains of the stage closed with no audience—but who cares?

4. On His Work Life

I am sort of vampire, taking the blood of other people.

5. On His Creativity

I have a sort of Alzheimer’s for my own work, which I think is a very good thing. Today too many people remember what they did—just forget it all and start again.

6. On Weddings And His Dresses

Normally, I don’t recommend me for wedding dresses—they all get a divorce.

7. On Labels

I am a living label. My name is Labelfeld, not Lagerfeld.

8. On Himself

I am a black diamond, unfaceted. Black diamonds are rare, hard to cut, and therefore uncommercial.

9. On Inking

I think tattoos are horrible. It’s like living in a Pucci dress full-time.

10. On Self Love

Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you sacrifice too much there’s nothing else you can give and nobody will care for you.

On the 19th of February, 2019 the world witnessed the loss of a great designer and visionary, Karl Lagerfeld. He was the creative director and major fashion houses Chanel and Fendi and also of his own label, Karl Lagerfeld.

He came from a humble background but grew to make a name for himself that can be compared to very few. His design aesthetic was as unique as his personality—which was classy, poised and a little bit savage.

He dedicated his entire life to work and the fashion industry will surely reap those benefits for years on end. The industry will never be the same without him, and these posts from prominent names in the fashion industry will prove that to you.

Oliver Rousteing

it was our moment.
Such a privilege to be able to share few but very special moments with you 🖤
Thank you for your advices you will always be remembered.
Love U Karl

Cara Delevigne

Every time I try and write about this man, all i do is cry. He changed my life, he believed in me when so many others didn’t including myself. He also introduced me to some of the most important and special people in my life. He is a visionary, a genius but more than that…. a dear friend. Outside of fashion, he was one of the most interesting and caring men I have ever met. I am so lucky and grateful to have had him in my life, worked with him and been able to spend time with him…. Although now, I wish it had been more. His legacy will live on forever. I miss you more than I could ever try and describe. I wish I had been able to tell you how much you meant to me. I love you @karllagerfeld all I can say is thank for the bottom of my heart 💔💔💔

Jonathan Simkhai

Karl, thank you for the decades of brilliance, inspiration, and beauty that you brought to this world. 🖤

Suzy Menkes

Karl loved this picture I took on a disposable camera at the Hedi Slimane Dior Homme show in Paris very early in the new millennium. Karl asked for a copy and propped it up by the window in his studio. It curled up and turned yellow – but maybe it’s still there as a reminder of how Karl viewed himself: enigmatic to the end.

Victoria Beckham

So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally. RIP 💔x vb

RIP, Karl Lagerfeld.

You will always be remembered.

7 Gowns From The 2019 Oscars Red Carpet You Wish You Could Afford

My day began earlier than usual, courtesy of the 91st Academy Awards, also known as, the Oscars! As I sat on my bed scrolling through Instagram, I found one stunning red carpet look after another flooding my feed.

Our first encounter with a celebrity’s look happens on the red carpet. So, essentially all we see is the finished look, and I don’t know about you but one of the first things that come to my mind is, “I wonder how much it costs?”

Most celebrities wear custom-made gowns, suits or dresses to an event as mammoth as the Academy Awards. Team this kind of customisation with a world renown designer label and you’ve got yourself an amount that you’ll probably have to give up your life savings for (but this cat can easily afford).

But the fashion junkie in me has the will to save up for a red-carpet worthy designer gown, and TBH, these seven looks are making it so difficult for me to pick just one design! Keep scrolling to see a few of my faves from the Oscars red carpet…

1. Jennifer Lopez‘s disco ball-esque Tom Ford gown

2. Lady Gaga‘s Chic Black Alexander McQueen Fit & Flare

3. Amy Adams‘ detailed white Versace

4. Emilia Clarke‘s sparkly Balmain gown

5. Charlize Theron‘s bare-backed Dior

6. Emma Stone‘s sequinned Louis Vuitton with statement shoulders

7. Brie Larson‘s sexy thigh-high slit Celine gown

Bonus Look

While all of these looks were equally stellar, this Oscars red carpet fashion blog wouldn’t be complete without a special mention to Billy Porter! He stepped on to the red carpet and blew us all away with a look that had 2019 written all over it. This Christian Siriano gown was gender non-conforming, chic, statement-making, and oh-so-stylish!

I personally loved Brie Larson’s look so much and would definitely want to spend my savings on a dress like that. What about you? Which look would you spend your cha-ching on? Tell me in the comments below!

Day 1 At LMIFW AW19 Was All About Sustainable Fashion That You Will Fall In Love With

Every other day we hear about the damage that’s been done to our planet. Which is why we have reached the stage where sustainability is the need of the hour. But how many of us really know what sustainability means? Let’s break that down first.

The 21st-century meaning of sustainability refers to the need to create sustainable models that are crucial for the planet and the human race’s survival. For that, focusing on actions and changes (even as tiny as saving water, planting trees) can really help in making a bigger positive impact on the Earth. But being sustainable isn’t just associated with lifestyle anymore, the fashion industry is taking an active part in it too!

Which is why, when the FDCI partnered with Liva’s #FeelsGreenFeelsGreat campaign to bring this season’s Autumn Winter Fashion Week, it became clear that change makers and authorities in the field were also realising that they needed to lead the way in taking a stand for sustainable fashion and for the Earth in general. And to showcase the fact that sustainability and style aren’t mutually exclusive concepts, they, in turn, threw the floor open to four top designers with varying aesthetics to showcase exactly this point. After all, designers are the trend forecasters and setters for all the rest of us.

1. Rina Dhaka

Starting off with Rina Dhaka, the collection was a flurry of frills and primarily rich reds, Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week started off splendidly.

2. Sahil Kochhar

Moving on to Sahil Kochar, his collection did more than justice to the cause by showcasing some of the most fun appliqué quilted jackets and trench coats we’ve seen while also demonstrating the laws of layering like a boss.

3. Samant Chauhan

Next in line was Samant Chauhan who used his signature all-white palette with a contrast of sporty stripes.

4. Shalini James

And finally, Shalini James’ Mantra Design Studio collection showcased muted earth tones of green and brown with beautiful prints in flowy saris and kaftans that made the models look like they were floating on the runway.
