A post shared by Anaita Adajania (@anaitashroffadajania) on

The first thing we associate with Sonam Kapoor is her impeccable sense of style. She’s always experimenting with international designers, new trends, and fresh OOTDs. So when it came to her wedding, I was ready to see Sonam slay her desi bridal looks with much glam. But to my surprise, Sonam went the other way round aka completely traditional. Sonam had stated to Harper’s Bazaar Bride that she’ll be wearing designers like Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, Anamika Khanna, and Anuradha Vakil for her wedding celebrations. And after seeing her wear Anuradha Vakil for her mehendi and AJSK for her sangeet, we were expecting to see Sonam as an Anamika Khanna bride. But to she gave us a pleasant surprise, in this gorgeous classic red and gold lehenga from Anuradha Vakil that had with lotus motifs and an intricately detailed border. The double dupatta drape and heritage-like jewellery is making our day RN!

Celebrity stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania just shared these images of Sonam Kapoor on her Instagram and we cannot deal with the level of grace (even through our phone screens!). Sonam truly proved that there is absolutely nothing that can compare to a fully tradional Indian bridal look!

The Royal Fashion Rules Meghan Markle’s Wedding Gown Must Follow

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be joined as one in marriage on the 19th of May, 2018 at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle with their royal entourage in tow, we cannot wait to see the happenings of this royal wedding unfold. Ever since their engagement was announced, we’ve been hooked to Kensington Palace’s Instagram account (@kensingtonroyal), ready to seize any new information about these two. Even though we’re half a world away, we’re pretty stoked about this royal wedding—So much so that we even drew up a list of places Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could go on their honeymoon.

It’s a clear no-brainer that the Royal wedding is a huge deal. As any wedding in any community would demand, this royal one also has it’s set of rules and regulations—Some, specific to just the bride. So as Meghan Markle prepares to don her (rumored) Ralph & Russo wedding gown, it must adhere to these rules:

1.  Wedding Gown Must Be White

As time passes by, brides are beginning to become more and more liberal. Bridal gowns aren’t just limited to whites anymore—Tones of blush, baby pink and sometimes even a soft beige are considered. But the royal wedding demands a pure white wedding gown.

2. There Must Be Lace

The wedding gown must consist of lace. (and from what we’ve read) this lace is considered a traditional fabric and is essential in order to complete a Royal bridal look.

3. Cleavage Is A Big No-No

The gown must be tastefully tailored—If we look back, Kate Middleton‘s wedding gown was low-cut too but there was no sight of her cleavage. So Meghan Markle might have a low cut wedding gown as well but the cleavage is what needs to stay in the seams.

4. …& So Are Shoulders

It is important for the bride to cover her shoulders as well. So we’re pretty sure we’re not gonna see Meghan in a strapless ballgown but we’re looking forward to the see the extravagant creation that it is.

No matter what the rules might be, we’re sure Meghan is going to make a stunning, stunning bride. What do you think her royal bridal look is going to be like. Let us know in the comments below!

Fat Tax: How New Look Just Discriminated Against The Entire Plus-Size Community

The world of fashion is always buzzing. Whether we’re talking about trends, luxury fashion or high street brands. Recently a much-loved high-street brand, New Look was caught in the crossfire for something known as Fat Tax. The store’s ‘Curves’ section housed a pair of pants that cost £3 ($4.04 in US dollars) more than the same pair in the store’s main collection as found by Maria Wassell, New Look‘s retail supervisor.

If you don’t understand what Fat Tax is exactly, let’s break it down together.

What is Fat Tax?

Fat Tax is when a store or brand puts a higher price on a larger piece of clothing when its smaller counterparts are of a lower price. Eg. A size 4 dress costs ₹1500  whereas the same dress in size 16 costs ₹2000. Fat Tax is exactly what it sounds like. Paying more money for being sizes higher than the average.

New Look Fashion (Source: www.BBC.com)

The larger size (left), in the Curves range, costs £22.99, while the very similar pair in the standard range cost £19.99

What does it imply?

By giving us better for lesser prices, the store is subtly dictating that women need to look a certain way. We live in a day and age where every body (yes, every body) is beautiful and, size is just a number on the back tag of your denim. Applying a higher price for the same clothes in a larger size is a clear sign of discrimination against individuals who might not have control over their size or height.

The Good News

New Look said in a statement: “We are in the process of reviewing the pricing structure of our Plus Size collection in a way which works best for our customers and our business.

Some retailers claim that a higher price is put on plus size clothing because of the extra materials needed—Do you think that is a fair justification? Let us know in the comments below.

Until then, keep loving yourself because you are magic!

I'd like to set an example here – so these mega brands with mega budgets think twice before plagiarising the work of…

Posted by Orijit Sen on Monday, January 22, 2018

We were quite shocked when the news of People Tree, a New Delhi-based design studio accusing luxury brand Dior of plagiarism surfaced. Creative fields, especially fashion, has always faced the burns of plagiarism. But when an acclaimed brand like Christian Dior, which is known for some of the most groundbreaking designs, is accused of stealing one—It brings such acts in the limelight for all to see. In an update to this debacle, co-founder of People TreeOrijit Sen, posted about an out-of-court amicable settlement of the dispute with the brand on Facebook, but later took down the post.

There's nothing quite as wonderful as a tribute from a friend and fellow artist. Thank you and much love Allen Shaw for…

In the post, he did talk about renovating an old Goan house to build a properly equipped studio. But the sign-off to the post was about how social media was the key instigator of it all. He even ended with a remark saying, ‘Social Media Zindabad‘. It does make us understand how vital social media platforms have become which in turn creates less room for copycats to escape now. Thanks to pages like Diet Prada and it’s Indian version, Diet Sabya, the calling out of such accused has become more blatant.

Hey mega brand Dior are you really that bereft of ideas that you need to steal print designs from independent designers,…

It might have started with just an Instagram story post, but the story gained momentum as Sonam Kapoor‘s editorial picture and the original print’s collage circulated through different social media platforms. Even online and print media, natively and internationally, covered the story.

Hey Unchristian Dior your thievery is being discussed in languages across the world – From Bahasa Indonesia to Italian to Hindi. Better say something now. Everyone's waiting to hear from you!

Orijit Sen kept up his conquest of justice with constant updates on Facebook. Even the online community contributed towards it, making it a campaign on its own. Therefore, leading it to its fruitful conclusion.

Though the settlement is a big win, we all know there is a long way to go. Is calling out the only solution or can the problem be curbed at its root? There are still many questions that remain unanswered, but with social media on board, the fight must go on.

Social Media Zindabad, indeed.

It’s the year of firsts for Janhvi Kapoor, and we’re not just talking about her big screen debut. She also made it to the cover of Vogue India in their June 2018 issue along with her first ever interview. Being a cover star for the very first time might be an intimidating task but Janhvi’s feature was all about relaxed vibes.

The editorial was shot by ace photographer Prasad Naik and was styled by fashion stylist Priyanka Kapadia. On the cover, she dons a printed blouse from Louis Vuitton. Her fresh face and smize make for a scintillating shot.

The best part of the editorial was the interview, as it was not your usual Q&A. While she is prepping up to take on the reel life, we got a glimpse of the ‘real-life’ Janhvi. Being a close family friend, Karan Johar took on the role of the interviewer and that helped Janhvi open up about the many nuances of her debut. Topics like why her mother didn’t want her to act, the bond she now shares with her half-siblings, and why she’s out to be the debut of the year, every aspect was discussed in the one-on-one interview. Karan dedicated the feature to Sridevi as its title perfectly suggests, ‘Her Mother’s Daughter’.

Police say she was found hanging from a red scarf Tuesday morning in her bedroom at her Park Avenue home in Manhattan. Manish Malhotra is known for his intricate, ornate work. The outfits he designs have the finesse, which ensures you get a head-turning entry wherever you go. So, when he decided to design clutches, we knew it’s not going to be your basic box clutch.  To top it off, he collaborated with the luxe ice cream brand, Magnum for this one. The result was a stunning, exclusive clutch collection that’s as delectable as the indulgent treat.

The shape, embellishments and even the handles were evidently inspired by the characteristic silhouette of Magnum. The featuring side tassels depict the dripping, delectable goodness of the ice cream. The richness of the indulgent treat was replicated with the glimmering embellishments and floral details that deck up the clutches.

But, the best part of this collection was that it was dedicated to his muses Vaani Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari and Pooja Hegde. In the making of these ornate clutches, he played with the monochrome palette. For Vaani he designed an all-white bedazzled creation, for Aditi it was a beaded black beauty and for Pooja, the classic mix of white and black. The work on these was a true reflection of his ornamental aesthetics.

These exquisite clutches were such a sweet and elegant gesture for his muses. The collection truly appreciated the delectable Magnum and the unique glam factor of Manish’s design.

If this association made you #TakePleasureSeriously, then tell us which one has been your most favourite. Here’s a glimpse of what happens when this delectable treat collabs with three different artists:

The Indulgence Express started with Pooja Dhingra, where she showcased her culinary skills by decorating the Magnums. Her inspirations were the glamorous dresses worn by Sonam Kapoor, Lisa Haydon and Neha Dhupia, along with an outfit designed by Masaba Gupta. A special Magnum was also dedicated to Pooja’s renowned, yummy macaroons.

Round two was for accessories, and Farah Khan Ali had real fun with Magnum as inspiration and Kalki Koechlin as the muse. An exclusive jewellery line was designed featuring a bracelet, a pair of earrings, a ring, a necklace and a brooch. Here the characteristics of the ice cream helped in the design process.

Manish Malhotra had a smashing finale by designing three spectacular clutches. But the best part of this exclusive collection was that it was dedicated to his muses Vaani Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari and Pooja Hegde. The Story Of Creative Plagiarism Continues As One More Indian Designer Steps Forward

Anupamaa Dayal

Thanks to DietSabya, (DietPrada‘s Indian counterpart) designers, both well-established and upcoming are now more aware of the how they create each design. The latest story is from the books of Delhi-based designer, Anupamaa Dayal. She has blamed the high-street women’s wear brand, W for stealing her boho-chic designs. She claimed to be very disturbed by the stark similarity between W‘s designs that incorporated Anupamaa‘s signature handprint block designs. One of which was from Gulabi, the collection that she launched in October 2013 and the other from Fight and Feast from March 2016.

“Through years of research, diligence and community interactions, we combine creative energy with ancient craft-forms, expose imaginative and skilled craftswomen/people to modern design aesthetics to create something that is contemporary, rich with heritage and as individual as our discerning customers” Anupamaa said.
Instances like these just show how difficult it’s getting to protect creativity. Every other day we see designs, silhouettes, and prints being stolen—One of the biggest cases being the Dior-Old Tree controversy, where Dior had taken a block print that was created and widely used by homegrown brand, Old Tree. (Read all about it here). They closed the case with a non-disclosure agreement and that was the end of it. Anupamaa too claims that her block print designs are extremely similar to the ones on the garments of W. Check them out below.

Fast Fashion: The Ugly Truth & What You Can Do To Change It

$
0
0

It’s hard to control our shopaholic tendencies when there are new collections dropping almost every few months and that too, at prices that are so reasonable. Part of us loves it but the other part also has us thinking, “How?”. In order for high street brands to pump out collection after collection, they would require that much raw material. And that’s where the Fast Fashion begins! The production, treatment, and discarding of this raw material causes so much environmental damage. So in case, you’re wondering how does all of this affect me and the world I live in? Keep scrolling!

What Is Fast Fashion?

Many of you might not know but the phrase Fast Fashion is a term used by retailers to describe inexpensive clothing collections that have been inspired by Fashion Week catwalks from all over the world, moved quickly to be made available to the masses. The main reason this happens is so that these high street brands can stay on-trend. As a result of this process and the need to stay “IN” with what’s trending, these very retailers degrade the environment with the rigourous manufacturing process of their clothes.

 What Causes The Environmental Damage?

The manufacturing process is what puts the fast in Fast Fashion, which is what causes the most damage to the environment. Let’s take, for instance, some common materials that we all own clothes in. Cotton clothes, for one, are the most common kind, but the vast amount of resources one needs to even create a single t-shirt is quite hard-hitting. For example, the creation of one shirt can use up to 2700 litres of water.  This is just a simple example of a cotton tee. The next step to making clothes is the dyeing process—The chemical waste produced as a result of dyeing clothes has caused rivers to be contaminated with toxins—A prime example being, the Citarum River in Indonesia.

Polyester also is another major element involved in the business of Fast Fashion. When this relatively cheap and easily available material’s production. Every fiber of this fabric used to make clothes causes environmental damage. The cheaply made fibers eventually land up in lakes, oceans and other water bodies causing damage to the aquatic life and the water body itself. Moreover, the microfibres being consumed by these fish eventually make it up to the food chain and could possibly land up on your plate.

These are only of the few materials that are used to make ‘on-trend’ clothes. So, to put it simply Fast Fashion is:

Designer Trends Showcased On The Runway > Designs & Trends Adopted By High Street Brands > Natural Resources & Raw Materials Used To Make Similar Clothing ASAP > Environmental Damage AKA Fast Fashion

Now, imagine this process happening an average of eighteen times a year just with one brand? We’re sure you have your answer.

What Can You Do About It?

What we’ve talked about here is only a drop in the bucket of the world of Fast Fashion, but it’s never too late to change. Try a few of these  ways to make sure your fashion fever isn’t harming the environment:

  • Shop less frequently
  • Invest in more Homegrown labels
  • Learn to Reuse and revamp old clothing
  • Thrift Shopping FTW
  • Tell at least 1 other individual about the consequences of Fast Fashion

How The Earth Feels RN

But don’t worry—Together, we can make a change!

Manish Arora For OPPO F9 Pro

I got to step in a little closer into the colour maestro, Manish Arora’s design studio and what an experience it was! I’ve always been in awe of designers like him—Ones who put so much thought and effort into the detailing of each garment they create. So when I saw the couture tee that he designed inspired by the OPPOF9Pro, needless to say, that I was completely mesmerised.

Manish Arora For OPPO F9 Pro

At first sight, all you might see is a really sparkly tee but if you look closer the details and design of it will remind you of the same sleek lines of the smartphone. The advantage of being an artist and a designer came through so clearly with every question that we asked Manish. I especially love how he says that the inspiration was the easiest part of the creation process. It’s the execution of that very inspiration differentiates him from a lot of other designers. With the use of over forty techniques in one outfit, I think it’s safe to say that Manish Arora is a designer who knows his game.

And his inspiration wasn’t restricted to the lines and colour of the phone. Everything from its reflective design to its ombre tone made was what Manish and his team had on their mind when they were creating this couture tee inspired by the OPPOF9Pro—Here’s all the proof!

Check it out:

Sushmita Sen and Rajkummar Rao

Yes, it’s true, it was Sushmita Sen who had us drooling over her at Lakmé Fashion Week. While she was totally stunning, even Rajkummar Rao‘s ramp walk made an impact on us. But the best part of day 2 ofLFW was the essence of the day itself, as it is dedicated to sustainable fashion. 5 Days Of Fashion are incomplete without it.

Designers are experimenting with the concept of sustainable fashion and making sure #KhadiGoesChic. They are on a mission to change our perception of this by transforming traditional handloom textiles and presenting them in a new avatar.

Here are the collections that did justice to the concept of #Day2 of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018:

She wore a red jumpsuit with a dhup-chav dupatta that was cinched at the waist, which made a unique statement.

Eka

The show started with a short film showcasing the production process of all Eka garments. The hand-spun and handwoven clothes displayed basic prints like stripes, checks and borders along with hand block prints. The easy silhouettes and light layers formed a comfortable outfit for mild winters.

Tencel™ Presents Rajesh Pratap Singh’s #PlanetPositive

From psychedelic prints being projected on a wall to animal prints getting a new canvas on shoes, Rajesh Pratap Singh‘s #PlanetPositive collection was presented by Tencel™ at LFW. Experimenting with the new textile, Singh had an array of silhouettes in both womenswear and menswear to offer. We love the way the collection escalated from the white palette to intense winter hues. Also, Rajkummar Rao was the cool and calm showstopper, who looked amazing in an all-white ensemble. He opened and closed the show with his suave walk and charming persona.

Blink and you’ll miss it! Last day of Lakmé Fashion Week always goes by so quickly, in fact, the 5 Days Of Fashion are generally filled with frenzy. The energy is infectious and you tend to get in sync with the vibe. The exposure to and first-hand knowledge of the upcoming season are added bonuses. The day was a star-studded affair and a great build-up for the grand finale of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter Festive 2018. Here are all the showstoppers and a glimpse into what all went down on the last day of LFW:

Tahweave

‘Unchartered’ by Tahweave was a depiction of the unchartered Irish lands and it’s culture. The feel of an Irish prairie came through with hand-woven fabrics, which was further enhanced by details like cut-work and Kantha embroidery. Actress Kriti Kharbanda closed the show in an asymmetric hem dress and teamed with a jacket.

Inspired by the beauty of Amer Fort from Jaipur, Punit Balana’s collection named the ‘Gulabi Chowk’ was conceptualised by taking the Jalebi Chowk and Sheesh Mahal into consideration. To start the lineup, Jim Sarbh took the lead. But just when we thought that was it, Radhika Apte made an angelic appearance in her knife pleated gown.

A thrilling performance by the crew members of Cirque du Soleil kick-started the grand finale. The gear shifted immediately to a glamorous evening, as the models started walking down the stage towards the hed ramp. Monisha Jaising had a performance planned of her own through her creations. She showcased her collection, Shades Of Diva, through different sequences and with an elaborate array of silhouettes. The fabrics were rich and jazzy and added to the grandeur of the finale. Shweta Bachchan-Nanda

A party theme of shimmer and shine and a vision for the theme-based dress led to this unbelievable collaboration between Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and the famous designer Monisha Jaising. With this one-off successful endeavour, came the idea of their new label MXS. We got the deets from the duo on their latest collection and this collaboration.

It is so evident via their label that they are friends first. The brand is very current and on point with global trends. Shweta mentions that the label aesthetics is influenced by street fashion, pop culture, travel and movies. It’s cheeky, preppy and playful vibe also has a hint of whimsy and glamour. As Monisha points out, keeping the collections special yet affordable, each piece will be a limited edition when it hits the stores. The label, which focuses on luxury streetwear style, was launched today in Mumbai.

Shweta Bachchan-Nanda

After showcasing her collection at the Grand Finale of Lakmé Fashion Week, this launch is a big event for Monisha Jaising. She explains to us her vision for the brand:

The brand is an expression of what the woman sees herself as today; where she is not confined by the dictates of work wear or festive wear. MxS believes that a woman should not be restricted by her age. Our styles have been designed for women of all ages and sizes. At MXS we believe that to compartmentalize a woman is taking away from her right of expression and we are happy to create designs that compliment any age or size.

Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Navya Naveli Nanda

Monisha mentions that even while designing the collection she knew that it is not unusual for young teenage girls to go into their mother’s closet and borrow something special for an occasion. This also explains their campaign shots that features Shweta’s daughter Navya Naveli Nanda. It concretes the fact that the label has no age bar and is all-inclusive.

Shweta Bachchan-Nanda even shares her experience about shooting with her daughter for the campaign:

It was really fun and easy working with her! Navya was so confident during the shoot. I was completely taken aback. Rohan Shreshta, who shot the campaign kept telling me to stop fussing over her and micro managing. That she was a natural! So, I let them get on with it. Navya has a lot of fun with her fashion and I learn from her every day.

Navya Naveli Nanda Navya Naveli Nanda

Shweta and Monisha did let us on their favourites from their first collection. Monisha loves the winged heart dress from the formal section and the Africa tunic, whereas, Shweta has a soft corner for athleisure and favours the evil eye tee, bomber jackets, track pants and sweatshirts.

Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Navya Naveli Nanda

We’re quite excited to check out their new collection and the label MXS. From the looks and sound of it, it’s going to be a smashing hit indeed. As they say, shimmer and shine are always fine!

Burberry Is Painting The Town B With Its New Monogram

The British luxury fashion house, Burberry has had quite a year. In the month of March, Italian fashion designer Riccardo Tisci took over the reins as the chief creative officer after Christopher Bailey. We all expected a change of direction but what we did not expect was an overhaul in terms of the logo redesign. On 1st August, Burberry revealed its new logo and monogram to the world on its Instagram platform.

View this post on Instagram

The #ThomasBurberryMonogram August 2018

A post shared by Burberry (@burberry) on

The new logo has a sleeker feel and has a sans-serif font. Even the monogram design is more modern and showcases ‘TB’ interlocked to form a pattern, that represents founder Thomas Burberry‘s initials. Both were designed in collaboration with graphic designer Peter Saville, who had redesigned the new logo for Calvin Klein last year. While going through Burberry‘s archives, Riccardo came across a monogram for Thomas Burberry from 1908, which was the inspiration for this new design. The brand even disclosed emails on Instagram, which were shared between Riccardo and Peter that explains the whole design process.

This has been a historic event for the brand and was done before Riccardo’s first show for the fashion house that we’ll see in September at London Fashion Week. So, we are expecting to see this monogram on the runway for sure. But there are some interesting ways in which it is being promoted currently. Burberry is painting the town B with their new monogram (literally). From beach umbrellas on Sunset beach in New York to the flagship store in Seoul, the monogram has taken over the scene. Here’s how the ‘TB’ was spotted everywhere around the world:

1. Beach Umbrellas On Sunset Beach, Shelter Island, New York

2. Building Facade At Soho, New York

6. Taxis On The Streets Of London

7. The #ThomasBurberryBear In Astor Place, New York

The new monogram is everywhere for everyone to see! How cool is that? What did you think about this redesigning of logo and monogram? Tell us in the comments below.

Anand Ahuja & Sonam Kapoor Announce The Overhaul Of His Brand Bhaane

While we were still getting over Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja‘s front row presence at Giorgio Armanis show, our Instagram feed buzzed with more news from this fashionable couple. They announced the appointment of designer Nimish Shah as the creative director for Anand’s homegrown brand, Bhaane.

Anand founded this cool-kid-on-the-block brand, Bhane in 2012 and since then, it has grown to be known as a contemporary and relevant fashion name amongst the youth. This year, in particular, has been special for the brand, especially because of their retail presence, with a store opening right here in Bandra.

The sync of Nimish and Bhaane is definitely going to be a good fit, as we can project a synergy of design aesthetics. But the overhaul is not just in terms of the creative direction. The addition of the letter ‘a’ in the name and the revamp of the logo, everything points to a new, fresh direction.

Here’s what Anand, Sonam and Nimish have to say about this partnership:

Bhaane is an evolving brand with a contemporary vision. Both Nimish and I are aligned in this vision and excited about the opportunities our market has to offer.

I have always admired Nimish’s design and aesthetic and worn his creations frequently over the years. With his penchant for cool vintage & finesse in fashion will expand Bhaane’s rationale, while still exciting our loyalist.

I am excited to continue the unique culture that has been created at Bhaane. I look forward to evolving house signatures that made customers fond of the brand while contributing a new perspective.

We’re quite excited about this new direction of the brand and we can’t wait for the first collection they’ll showcase under Nimish Shah’s guidance.

With the race of being relevant, fashion houses are revamping their integral structures and aligning it towards future prospects. With fashion month still going on and witnessing Versace show just a week ago, the news of that Michael Kors Holdings Ltd acquiring the Italian luxury fashion house for approx 2.1 billion dollars was shocking, to say the least. After acquiring the luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo last year, with this new deal on the table, Michael Kors’s conglomerate shows positive and upward growth.

Versace, founded by designer Gianni Versace, is a luxury fashion house dedicated to delivering elegant and posh designs to a high-end target audience. A fashion brand with a good profile and history like Versace will only strengthen the American conglomerate. It was reported by Bloomberg that the company said it plans to increase Versace’s sales to $2 billion annually, more than double the current level, expanding the number of stores globally to 300 from about 200 and accelerating e-commerce development. They also mention in their report that Michael Kors aims to lift Versace’s accessories and footwear to 60 percent of sales from 35 percent.

Though it is said that Donatella Versace will continue to be the creative lead for the brand and Jonathan Akeroyd, the current CEO for Versace will manage the brand, we are very interested to know what will be the future of the fashion house under the reins of a conglomerate. Can’t wait to see the outcome of this powerhouse partnership!

Rimzim Dadu

One of the signature looks that we loved, from Rimzim Dadu’s collection, was the lace stencilling in the pieces. Hand-made chiffon cords, metallic cords and metal wires were also seen on the runway.
