Looking like a princess, dropped from the pages of Indian history, Bollywood star Chitrangda Singh was one of the glamorous show-stoppers on the ramp on the first day of the IIJW (India International Jewellery Week) in Mumbai, yesterday.

Team MissMalini chatted up with the dazzling beauty about her personal taste in jewellery and you will be surprised to know that diamonds aren’t at the top of her list.

Here’s what she revealed exclusively to us:

Team MissMalini (Team MM): Tell us about the designer whose jewellery you sported on the ramp today at the IIJW 2014 in Mumbai?
Chitrangda Singh (CS): Her name is Moni Agarwal and she is this young twenty-eight year old designer from Hyderabad. I really like her work, more so because the kind of designs that she’s showcasing so early in life is really fantastic. When I first saw the trinkets she sent me, I was enchanted by them and that’s why I’m walking the ramp for her today. 

Team MM: From your own personal collection of jewellery, which piece do you hold most dear to you and why?
CS: On a trip to America a few years ago, I had picked up this ear-cuff with semi-precious stones in it. Of course, it’s just for one ear. I particularly like it because it’s a bit Boho and a bit traditional. A nice mix, actually.

Team MM: If there is one famous historical piece of jewellery, which you would like to wear, which one would it be and why?
CS: I would love to wear a traditional Muslim paasa. It’s a piece of jewelry you wear to one side of your head. So I’d love to wear the one made famous by Empress Noor Jahan in the iconic painting of her.

Team MM: What is the style of jewellery you personally favour for yourself?
CS: I personally love wearing simple, statement pieces. Sometimes, I would wear just a nath (nose ring) or just a haath-phool (hand chains). I also love antique Victorian jewellery. Anything that is old and vintage attracts me. I’m not particularly fond of anything that is too shiny or sparkly. And hence, this may come as a surprise to you, but unlike most girls, I don’t like diamonds that much.

Team MM: Do you have any heirloom jewellery that has been handed down to you from your mother or grandmother?
CS: Yes! There is this necklace, which my mother wore for her wedding and I now have it with me. It holds a lot of sentimental value for me.

Vikram Bawa

Known for creating magic through his camera lens, Vikram Bawa has been bringing his photos alive for various publications, advertisements, campaigns and even celebrity shoots. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that he has been nominated at the International Fashion Film Awards (IIFA) 2014. His film, ‘The Long Show’ is nominated for not one but two categories – Best Art Direction and Best Music Nomination.

Vikram’s film was made for Falguni & Shane Peacock and will be screened at the La Jolla Film Festival at the end of July. One of the first Indian photographers/filmmakers to be invited and nominated at the festival, Vikram’s name is featured amongst iconic fashion filmmakers, artists and photographers such as David Zimmerman, Ellen Von Unwerth and Nadav Kander.

A prestigious festival, La Jolla is often called the Cannes of fashion film festivals and will see a number of hollywood insiders and influential filmmakers from all the fashion capitals of the world. We wish Vikram all the best and we hope he brings home the prize!

Dia Mirza

Glowing, undoubtedly, from all the rave reviews her film Bobby Jasoos has garnered over the past few weeks, actress and producer Dia Mirza looked resplendent on the ramp at the ongoing IIJW (India International Jewellery Week) in Mumbai.

Off the ramp of course, the main topic interest was her upcoming wedding to long time beau, Sahil Sangha.

Team MissMalini got Dia to reveal the details of her bridal trousseau and here’s what she told us in an exclusive chat:

Team MissMalini (Team MM): What makes the jewellery which you modelled today on the ramp at IIJW, special and different?
Dia Mirza (DM): I think it’s all about the lady behind the label, Shobha. I have been fortunate to wear a lot of exquisite jewellery throughout my career as a model and as an actress and of course, all of it has been beautiful. But I always feel the association becomes special when the people involved with the craftsmanship are interesting people on a personal level.

What’s fascinating is that Shobha is an elderly lady, who is well into her golden years. She started off young and the best part is that she doesn’t come from a family with a jewellery background. She has really built the brand with her own efforts and hard work.

When she approached me to walk the ramp for her, I was taken in by her simplicity and her genuine personality. I think it’s cool that with so many new and young designers showing off their designs at IIJW, here is a lady who is well into her sixties and is as excited as the young ones to show off her designs on the ramp.

Team MM: What is your personal taste in jewellery like?
DM: It depends on what the occasion is or what the attire is that I’m wearing. I’ve realized that I gravitate towords classic jewelry. I love antique designs. In fact, I’m particularly fond of Mughal style jewelry. I’m not too fond of contemporary styles. I usually gravitate towards jewelry that has a classic, old-world style and element about it.

Team MM: Do you own any pieces that are family heirlooms and were handed down to you by your mother or grandmother?
DM: My mother has given me a bangle, which she had bought with her very first salary. It’s a thin bangle encrusted with Basra pearls. It’s very precious because I know how important and significant jewelry can be in a woman’s life.

I remember, when I was a young teenager, she was very upset because most of her jewelry had been robbed. Much of what was taken was inherited from her mother and mother-in-law. But she was more upset about the fact that she would have nothing to give me when it was time for me to get married.

I remember telling her, “Don’t worry about it. I’ll make my own money and buy my own jewellery”.

I’ve never regretted not having khandani jewelry and I’m very happy with what I’ve been able to put together for myself, over the years, with the money that I’ve earned. And I think my mother really appreciates that.

I hope that when (and if) I have a daughter, she does the same.

Team MM: Have you put together the jewelry for your up-coming wedding to Sahil Sangha?
DM: Ritu Kumar has designed my wedding outfit and Anita Dongre will also be designing an outfit for one of the other functions. But over the years, I have slowly collected some nice pieces of jewelry and I’m sure I will use only those. I don’t think it will be very necessary for me to go wedding jewelry shopping.

I have not worn a lot of the pieces because somewhere at the back of my mind, I would buy them knowing that I would wear them only when I get married.

Team MM: Which historical pieces of jewelry would you like to own?
DM: The Nizam of Hyderabad’s collection, for sure! It’s interesting that a number of pieces from the collection have a very Victorian influence. So even though it has that whole Mughal, Muslim feel to it, there is a marked European, Victorian style element. Every single piece is fascinating as it takes your breath away.

Raveena Tandon

While actress Raveena Tandon has stayed away from mainstream Bollywood for a couple of years, she will make a dramatic comeback in Anurag Kashyap‘s Bombay Velvet, in which she reportedly plays a Jazz singer.

Team MissMalini met her at the ongoing IIJW (India International Jewellery Week) in Mumbai and we spoke to her about her favourite pieces of jewellery. Here’s what she revealed to us, exclusively:

Team MissMalini (Team MM): Tell us about the brand of jewellery you sported on the ramp at the India International Jewellery Week (IJW2014) today. What is different about it?
Raveena Tandon (RT): I walked the ramp for designers Dipti & Amisha. Their designs are not the typical, regular kind of jewellery that you see. It’s very different and unique. If you look at the necklace I’m wearing, they have fused many different elements to make for one stunning piece. There is a layer of polki-cut diamonds, then a layer of rubies, and then a layer of emeralds and even a layer of polki-cut diamonds paired with scintillating, traditionally cut diamonds as well. It’s not like if it’s a set with emeralds, then you’re only wearing emeralds. What works for me is the many elements that come together to make up a single piece.

It’s experimental, new and definitely something different!

Team MM: What is the style of jewellery that you personally favour for yourself?
RT: I like big pieces (smiles). It really depends actually. Sometimes I just wear solitaires – two in my ears and a ring on my finger. Or at times, I would just wear one big chunky piece around my neck to make a statement. I like statement pieces. Subtle, yet statement pieces!

Team MM: Which piece of jewellery from your personal collection is your most favourite, and why?
RT: There are actually lots of them. Every piece of my jewellery has some story. But one which comes to mind is a beautiful hand-painted Shiva pendant, that is set in emeralds, sapphires and diamonds. I always get many compliments about it, whenever I wear it, so now I’ve got two more made – one for my son and one for my daughter.

In fact, now I’ve started making all my jewellery in twos – one for my son’s bride-to-be and one for my daughter, of course!

Team MM: Do you have any heirloom pieces of jewellery that hold sentimental value for you?
RT: Yes! My mother gifted me a tiny Gita (Holy book) made in gold and I’m going to convert it into a locket. I’m working on designs for that at the moment. I have not seen anyone else wearing something like that. It came from my nani to my mother and now she has given it to me. So it’s a very sentimental and valuable piece for me.

Team MM: Is there any famous and historical piece of jewellery that you would like to personally own?
RT: I wouldn’t like to own it but I rightfully feel that the jewellery, which was plundered and taken away from India through the British Raj, should be returned to India. I think it’s part of our heritage and our country needs it back.

Shu Uemura & Karl Lagerfeld are teaming up to launch a makeup line called  Shupette by Karl Lagerfeld and “Choupette” will be the face of its campaign. The line will be launched in the coming holiday season and will include all things cute like furry lashes and claw polish.

Choupette often frequents St.Tropez on Lagerfeld’s private jet. She loves looking at the sky trough the windows and has special cockpit access. She travels in a custom designed travel bag by Bernard Arnault who is her biggest fan. Even though she is indirectly part of the Chanel family, she despises Chanel No.5 prefers Colette shopping bags.

When Karl’s at home, he always eats next to her.She is usually seated on a smaller table next to him. Choupette Lagerfeld does not eat on the floor! She is served her specially prepared gourmet meals in custom made Goyard or Louis Vuitton dishes. Her daily diet includes  croquette and paté.

10. She was Catnapped by Karl Lagerfeld

Story goes that, Lagerfeld was cat-stitting for French model Baptiste Giabiconi on Christmas and fell in love with the fluffy kitty. He refused to give her and even went as far to express his desire to marry her. Quoting Karl, “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat,”

Behind The Scenes

Narendra Kumar & SWISS International Air Line’s Fashion-Art calendar is all set to release this month and we can’t wait to see the magic they have created this time. The calendar was shot by Prasad Naik at the Hotel Palace Lucerne in Switzerland and the theme this year was Swiss Hospitality. Narendra Kumar even told us about how there’s one outfit created for different parts of the world and how they hadn’t even seen the models personally before the shoot – all he was given was measurements and pictures. Why you ask? Well the models weren’t professionals! They were the actual crew members of SWISS International Air Lines! After 80 applicants only a lucky 6 were selected to feature in the calendar. Here’s a little story behind 3 of those lucky girls.

Meet Kathrin Schneider. Kathrin has actually modelled before for a Swiss hotel chain a few years ago, so this couldn’t have been very different for her. Having worked for SWISS for 8 years and counting, she has always wanted to be in aviation ever since she was little. She’s been to India several times because her job takes her to all the different parts of the world and she loves her short stays in India because she feels that in the hotels, you’re treated like a royal.

Alin Aykac has the expressive eyes of an Indian folk dancer. She has worked for SWISS for over three years and enjoys working with children for which she’s about to enter the world of child psychology soon. Having never posed for a professional camera before, Alin was quite shy in the beginning. Once she had a chat with Narendra Kumar and Prasad Naik, they managed to calm her nerves and she was able to slip into ‘princess mode’ quite easily.

She gelled with Narendra and the calendar crew instantly and by the end of it they were all crying with laughter and taking several selfies.

Uncle Karl is going to be made into a Barbie doll as part of Mattel’s Barbie Collector series. The limited edition doll will be completely kitted up in the designers iconic look, right down to the fingerless glove.

The first sketch of the doll that was released on WWD yesterday, shows an androgynous Barbie – not Ken – dressed in the Chanel designer’s image wearing Karl’s signature tailored jacket, high collared white shirt and skinny jeans. Barbie will even have the Uncle Karl’s “platinum rinse” ponytail. (BTW, platinum rinse is my new favorite phrase after Sunil Sethi’s hangout yesterday) The doll comes with a set of accessories like a key, fat necktie, dark sunglasses and ankle boots.. What!! No Choupette??

Kim Culmone, VP of Design for Barbie comments, “Working with Karl Lagerfeld for this unique creative collaboration has been an incredible honor, it’s not every day that Barbie dresses like the world’s most famous fashion designer.” This is the second time the the designer is working with Mattel. In 2009, Karl dressed Barbie in Chanel for the brand’s 50th anniversary. Lagerfeld Barbie will be sold under the Barbie Collector line. More details will be available later in the year. Till then, have you met this cutie?

You’ve heard of the fashion police, you’ve witnessed fashion crimes (you might even have committed some) but have you ever received a fashion fine? Thanks to the courts of Ocala in Florida, committing a fashion crime will now be counted as an actual legal indiscretion.

If Saif was in Florida right now, he’d be in a lot of trouble!

The Ocala City Council recently passed a law that prohibits anyone from exposing their underwear by wearing their pants two inches below their waistline. Getting caught wearing your pants two inches below your natural waist in a way that exposes underwear or bare buttocks is subject to a $500 fine and six months in jail. All ‘hip-hoppers’ – men & women alike – better watch out if they plan to visit this Florida city! Known as “Sagging” or “low-riding” this major fashion crime was made popular by ghetto wannabes and continues to be vital to the thug look.

Here are some reasons from the Ocala Council on why they criminalized sagging:

“I just think it’s disgraceful to show your underwear, We try to be a nice, clean city. I think it’ll help clean it up some”.

“It’s disrespectful”

“If you pull them up, you might be a better citizen because you may be able to find a job, J.O.B.”

“It doesn’t matter what color they are, they all wear their pants down.”

“The city has the right to make sure people are not naked and feels the same can be said about sagging pants.”

Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski

Just days after the news of Christophe Lemaire leaving Hermès to concentrate more on his own brand, was out; Hermès made another announcement. They appointed a new artistic director to take the brand ahead and her name is Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski. Haven’t heard of her before? We’re telling you everything you need to know about the newest successor of the luxury fashion house.

1. Her Background

Vanhee-Cybulski is about 36 years old and has a degree from the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers in visual arts, fashion, costume and textile design.

2. Her Resume

In the past, she’s worked with Maison Martin Margiela, Céline and most recently, The Row.

3. Her Hermès connection

She was a member of the design studio of Maison Martin Margiela between 2005 to 2008. A year before her arrival, Martin Margiela who headed Hermès, decided to leave.

4. Her Skills

Céline, Maison Martin Margiela, (and even The Row sometimes), showcase clean silhouettes and a very minimalistic vision, which is synonymous with the style at Hermès. So don’t expect Vanhee-Cybulski to throw a curveball at Hermès anytime soon; From where everyone’s seeing it, she’s going to fit right in.

5. Her First Collection

She is slated to present her first ever collection of women’s ready-to-wear for Hermès in March 2015.

She said “I am delighted to be joining Hermès, a house I so admire andwhose values I share wholeheartedly“, while the CEO of the fashion house, Axel Dumas, also confirmed that she will be devoting herself full-time to Hermès.

Just like clockwork, Elle India unveiled their August 2014 cover on social media early this morning. At first all I saw was a pink jacket and of course being pink, I fell in love. Wearing separates from Rajesh Pratap Singh and Fendi eyewear, Kiran made the cover of Elle India’s Geek Issue.

She quizzed her fans on the names of shades and shared her own personal make-up and beauty tips. In fact, the Bollywood babe handpicked fans to receive nail art tutorials from an artist during the hangout.
